I have a Spector Euro 5lx and due to the shape of tbe bridge am limited to using strings with a tapered B. My last few sets have been Spector branded and bought direct from Spector USA. Rather than buying another set of Spectors from the USA, can anybody recommend a similar set of nickel plated round-wounds with a tapered B string that are easy to get hold of in the UK?

I asked the same question some months ago in relation to fitting strings to me Warwick Thumb.

What I ended up doing was filing the bridge to make the gap wider to get the string through. You still need to clamp the string narrow to get it to fit through, but it was an answer to the problem.

Newtons will do this custom.
La Bell Steps are tapered and DR also had a T B option as well.

Thanks for the recommendations - I've just looked up the La Bella Steps and unfortunately they appear to be stainless steel and not nickel plated. I'll look up Newtons - being custom made, are they stupidly expensive?

According to the Spector website, the Euro 5LX comes fitted with D'addario XL-170-5 Nickel sets, which you can get over here.

I don't think so, I put in my usual order of tapers on all strings for a 5 and 3 sets cost me just £90 Inc postage... Iirc

Do you think these will be OK? GAK describe them specifically as being 34" scale - will they be OK on the 35" Spector Euro?

My advice is contact Newtone and tell them what you want.
I've gone over to using their strings on all my basses and they provide tapered B strings for my Warwick Corvette 5.
The owner/manager Neil Silverman is a good guy and an active supporter of musicians.
A British specialist manufacturing company. Well worth supporting I think.

We don't do any sets that include tapered strings but we have got a full range of tapered singles. My recommendation would be to buy a 4 string set of the gauge you want and pair it with the appropriate tapered low B. For example to get the equivalent EXL170-5 set, buy an EXL170 set and a single XLB130T tapered .130 gauge B string.

Fender 8250 sets have a tapered B & E. They are nickel plated steel. Came with my Fender Jazz deluxe that I used to own. Liked them a lot.
