Cheap Lights

Very few of our pubs have lights. A few clubs do, but it is the exception rather than the rule

Very few of the originals left now - Viv Stanshall, the prime mover, died a while back & their guitar player, who was in one of MY first groups, Tony "Bubs" White, died a couple of years ago too, sadly. A wonderfully insane band. Have a listen to some of Neil Innes` work after the Bonzos quit.

Blue, a good place to start with ex-Bonzo's would be Neil Innes' work helping to create The Rutles.

Also, as you've said you love British humour, then The Rutles film is a must see!!

Obviously being a fan my favourite one for sheer off the wall has to be my pink half of the drainpipe

Back on to the lights - I use one LED KAM Powerbar set up facing us where possible (lights at the back just put us in darkness to the audience) and two Powerbars for big stages. These aren't cheap but I really rate them. You get what you pay for I guess...

I loved the Ruttles - had the album.

I bought a cheap set - KAM partybar Mk2. Under £150. They work just fine but not that bright. Added a second set - they are cheaper now! - to work in unison and that was great. Nothing complex, just set to sound activated.

Some other lights are probably on the cards at some point. I am actually interested in DMX programming, but for the moment the venues we play at are not really big enough for anything too elaborate.

We picked up a couple of T bar stands like these from ebay- they came with a gantry middle bit which we never use - for £40

I started off with the usual parbar system. They provide a lot of light for the money but are more appropriate for a disco than a band. They are also top heavy and flash through their effects faster than you would probably want if the band rather than the lights are meant to be the main attraction. I then bought a 12way lighting bar http://www.americandj.eu/en/ultra-bar-12.html which sits on the floor behind the band casting light up against the rear wall it's still too fast but really effective, takes up no space and concentrates peoples attention on the band. If you want a single light then this is what I'd go for. Combine it with a couple of static lights to let the band see what they are doing and you'd have a great little set up.

If you're interested in programming DMX I'd take a look at some of the Raspberry Pi-based stuff. I bought a controller a few years ago before I knew about the Pi stuff. I use it to cycle through some colour washes with 4x cheap parcans and control the flashy light thing. Unfortunately the git/voc insists that the haze machine gives him a sore throat so I don't use that any more (shame!). Most of the kit came from Thomann

Wood - how bright are those little led par cans? What sort of flood angle?

They are surprisingly bright, you wouldn't want to look into them for long!
In the day in my living room they lit up the opposite wall, so they are going to have no trouble at gigs. No gig this weekend though, so not going to get any photos of that.

The angle is reasonably wide, certainly not a spotlight, so putting them on the floor by the side of the band is going to wash it all with colour - it is what we want at the moment.

Just to give you an idea this is a single 12 way bar behind the drummer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyCpTuErSR8 It needs some light from the front to throw something onto our faces but I reckon what you have would do that nicely.
