spikydavid
I'm struggling with Cry Me A River - any hints of thoughts on how to make this sound good - especially the start of the form?
spikydavid
Oops - should specify that this is the jazz standard, not the Justin Timberlake song...
bassace
Get hold of the Julie London version on Spot. The instrumentation is quite sparse so you should be able to hear the bass line. The guitar by Barney Kessel is sublime.
ivansc
Was about to recommend the same version. First saw her do it in the rock and roll exploitation film "The girl cant help it" Actually a great film for quality cameos by several seldom-filmed acts. Sadly Cliff Gallup is NOT in the Gene Vincent & the Bluecaps lineup though.
ambient
The lead sheet as played by one of the jazz bands I play for. Don't know if it's of any use ? [attachment=227336:Cry me a river.png]
Grangur
Juie London Http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DDXg6UB9Qk0o&ved=0ahUKEwiQ76SH8P7OAhWD0RQKHe2PBxkQ3ywIKjAB&usg=AFQjCNEaGxx739baLLrAHXazEXgJ3VSkqQ Jeff Beck & Imelda May Http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhC-V-sjN4k Alison Moyet's version is pretty great too, but it's also much 'busier' so the bassline is harder to pick out. (I hope the links work. I'm doing this on my phone) Edited September 8, 2016 by Grangur
spikydavid
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm listening to the Julie London version and transcribing. The lead sheet has some ideas in the left hand that are worth looking at... Gig is this evening - let's see how it goes...
luckydog
Oh ! You'll need to know how the keys/guitar are harmonising much of the song, such as the fantastic opening, if you are to avoid train crashes on bass plus to make the most of the opportunities. It can be sublime and beautiful, but all hangs on the exact harmonisation being played. 3 different versions seldom hang together ! bassace
It has quite a 'grown up' middle eight melody but the chords under it are surprisingly simple.
lowdown
Don't forget the great version by Ella! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Gn9A-kdsRo
