largo
Personally I'd be pushing the Gain until almost clipping & with most amps, that would be 1 or 2 'o clock. 9 'o clock seems awfully low. If you need punch I'd try dialling the bass or low mid to 2 or 3 'o clock. I know that all depends on the bass in question, preamp etc.
progben
So ... your playing with the bass control at 1 and complaining thats its "impossible to dial in a sound with punch and it honestly sounds nasal" .. am I missing something obvious ?.
As below, 1 as in 1 o clock. My apologies for not making this clearer!
largo
So, have you tried pushing the gain up to 1 or 2 'o clock and driving the amp a little more?
Lozz196
For reference, I play with Drive @ 3, Gain @ 9, Bass @ 1, Treble @ 9, Low Mids boosted slightly and this seems to work in most situations for me. I then make adjustments to the bass's pre-amp for tweaks between songs live.
Adding in Drive reduces both lows and highs, and makes the sound more vintagey. Adding in low mids, combined with Markbass cabs that also roll off the top-end will be putting a lot into that nasally range. To get the same kind of overdrive going on swap the Drive and Gain settings around, see if that adds some punch as now there should be more definition on the top-end, plus some more lows. Oh is it a sort of Drive control? largo
I'm not sure if you're having a laugh or taking the p***? I did a quick Google image search before posting my comment & the TH500 amp has a knob with Gain written above it. That's the control I mean. stingrayPete1977
I'd take an active bass and a class D amp over a passive bass and a heavy lump, that said I can't get on with a passive bass and a class D head, it misses something no doubt about it for me. Kev
Class D heads vary so much it is impossible to generalise them the way some are in this thread. I'm not going to get involved, but all I will say is the TH500 sounded very thin and weedy in comparison to my Tecamp Puma when AB'd with the band, something really lacking in the sound. Lack of heft? Just don't!
Defo
Had the same problem, changed to a Tecamp Puma 900, problem solved.
warwickhunt
Class D heads vary so much it is impossible to generalise them the way some are in this thread.
Possibly but if the 'majority' of the Class D's are using the same module then maybe that is why the generalisation. Also, even where there is variation in the power module used, are they pretty much of a likeness in specification/stats/measurements? Jazzjames
Turn the gain up, drive down, and you'll get a more quick sound that may result in more punch. I think (generally) it's better to stay within one brand for both speakers and amps- they're designed and tested together after all. I can tell you that my tonehammer hits just fine with my DB112 cabs. Punchy, present, fat, clear, it's a great rig that's easy to move around. Good luck solving your problem!
