JimboJim Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Hello . I have just bought a fender 72/73 bass. I would like to find out as much a it it as possible! For example, what wood did fender use back in 72/73 ? Alder or Ash? Did fender precision had nitrocellulose finish for the body ? Any other tips ? Would be highly appreciated ! Is there a big difference between early 70,s and late 70's p basses ? Quote
Highfox Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Congrats, nice bass. It's an F series Fender from that timescale, had a 70/71 just like it once. In my experiance the early 70's Fenders are very nice, haven't come across a bad one yet. Quote
Sibob Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 For me the wood is slightly difficult. It's either low grade ash, or high grade alder, as the figuring is kinda in between those. Someone with more wood knowledge will confirm. I'm edging toward Alder. They were thin poly finishes by then, not nitro, unless it's been refinished. Si Quote
Beer of the Bass Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Is that finish original? I'm not that up on old Fenders, but the dark part of the burst looks differently shaped from the typical Fender sunburst. Or did they vary like that? Quote
wateroftyne Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 That's lovely!
Is that finish original?
It''s typical 70s 'burst fade... the red disappears through exposure to sunlight, leaving it pretty much 2-tone, while the back remains standard 3-tone. Quote

I guess I've not seen enough from this era for that to be familiar to me. Quote
JimboJim Posted September 16, 2016 Author Posted September 16, 2016 (edited) Thanks for your reply guys ! To me the body looks looks like ash, although I could be mistaken . Are there any experts on wood ? Also any fender precision experts who can tell me a bit more about early 70s fenders ? Anyone here who owns 72/73 p bass ? Does anybody know if that is the period when fender started making ask bodies ? From what I see that from 75 onwards till 81 they were ash bodies. My bass weights 4.5 kg. oldbass Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Just sold my old one....thunderous sounding bass, very strong mid range. 9.5 lbs Bridge in wrong place (factory correct due to worn out jigs) Wonky router edge on lower neck pocket (factory correct due to worn out machinery) Fine grained Alder body. Never seen one like yours with that strong grain pattern..looks rather unusual. Quote

Lozz196 Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 I usually go by the sound on determing between alder and ash, rich and warm but with some bite being alder, fiercely aggressive, slightly scooped and shouty being ash. Quote

Sibob Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 It's likely that they saved all their ash for natural finishes, sunburst and colours would likely have all been Alder. Si Quote
