franzbassist
I like GHS Precision Flats - a good core tone and nice tension. Pyramids seems to twist easily - re-seat the string a couple of times to make sure there's no twisting. La Bella - give white/copper/gold nylons a try, as they have lovely low tension yet retain that flat character. They can also be quite bright, depending on the flavour you choose. Chromes were far too tight and bright for me.
BobVbass
RS66 Stainless for me but you have to play them for a few years to get the best sound... La Bella's were nice but as many people have mentioned, felt a little too high tension
therealting
Just to update - Pyramid have kindly agreed to send me another E string, so I'll see how that goes. I have a set of TI Flats waiting in the wings if that doesn't work out. [/quote] After you've brought the string up to tension, slacken it off again but hold the string tight on the tuner as you do it. Sometime you will see that the string has twisted and by releasing the tension you can ensure it's straight when you wind it up again. dannybuoy
If you wrap the string around the post a couple of times before turning the peg, this twists the string. If the ball end isn't rotated to free it, you can end up tightening a twisted string, which can result in dead sounding strings, strange overtones, or even a chorus-like effect. therealting
Ah, gotcha. Will remove the string and try again. Thanks for the clarifications!
