Nate
The melody is too disjointed in that simpsons thing... No flow and very little groove. A novelty with no substance methinks. Not sure i'm into the facial expressions...

No opinion about the facial expressions - whatever helps, I guess. Still, I quite liked the rest of it.
steve-soar
I bet his mommy is so proud of him, maybe thats why she bought him the Alembic. Now if only the $50,000 she paid to his shrink could get rid of those facial ticks.
Steve Rickwood
Hmmm - I've not seen the clip, but I'm not sure we should slate someone for their expressions! If Jaco, Mark King or any bass 'guru' is allowed to then we should leave alone. If you watch people like Steve Vai (we are discussing PERFORMANCE here, not bass...) or Adrian Belew you can witness their expression with the music - they let their instrument speak. Countless others do too, this is obviously a can of worms in the making. Of course, if it IS as ridiculous as everyone says then I take it all back! Maybe I'm just paranoid cos I pull a lot of faces when I play! Edited July 13, 2007 by Steve Rickwood

The Funk
We call it the 'sex face'. Every guitarist/bassist pulls them when they're totally into it. Some have great ones, others have awful ones. I can excuse the bad ones if the playing's great.
Steve Rickwood
Haha! for part of my degree I had to learn drums to a basic extent. My friend said, "The face you pull whilst playing drums is the face you pull whilst having sex." Since then I have never been able to see him in the same light when we gig together. nig
There are some truely insane genious's out there, stop the typical brittish knocking everyone, as they sure play the arse off of me, amazing, although how one ever starts out on that style of playing is a musical mystery to me, I had a go on a chapman stick once, that stuffed me and I do tap the odd chord 4th when playing but as for them 2, the short clip withstanding....im sure a life in jazz on prozac awaits as for the funny faces, go watch robin trower the grand daddy of facial expression. ( whoopsie, ive started having a pop at 'em )
The Funk
It's actually typically un-British to knock people. That's why some might argue that Britain's not great at anything anymore. And some might argue that's why we have to find a way to compensate. Some might argue the ways in which we compensate include throwing our (limited) weight around on the world stage and overpricing everything. Hence rip-off Britain and lapdog PMs. Go look at all the youtube comments for clips of musicians having a go - it's astounding the levels of criticism people throw around on there. And the majority of those guys are American. There's a good side and a bad side to the competitive streak that we seem to hide away from. The Funk
Joe Walsh pulls a pretty weird 'sex face'. But it fits perfectly with what he's playing, so who cares?

BassJase
I think its amazing that this post has gone from a guy playing bass, to snobbery about his "lack of flow", to the reasoning about why Britain is poop. Is it me, or has this got a bit too serious? I think the guy's cool for being able to do what he can do, and not being afraid to share it. And when it comes to "playing faces", i apparantly don the stare of the keyboard player from Sparks.
