bubinga5
I'm aware that Andy Rourke played on alot of the Smiths stuff, but we're there other bassists.? I'm totally unaware of the bassists on these brilliant records. I think think this is just fabulous bass playing. http://youtu.be/cJRP3LRcUFg
bubinga5
I adore the bass playing on this record. http://youtu.be/TaUUYV7wKos
Cato
Morrissey apparently doesn't think bass players (or drummers) contribute that much...
Indy
Loved Andy Rourke and his sound. Think I remember him saying he liked to do bass lines as a song within a song. Love the bass line in Barbarism begins at home. Jonny Marr said that the queen is dead album wouldn't have been possible without the bassists contribution. BrunoBass
I have a lot of respect for Andy Rourke's bass playing. Whilst personally I wasn't a fan of his tone he played some interesting stuff. The isolated bass line of This Charming Man is worth checking out on You Tube. I was lucky enough to see The Smiths twice (1984 and 1986) and both times I was impressed by how tight Andy and Mike Joyce the drummer were. Amazing songs too... Barking Spiders
I never been overawed with Marr's guitar work but without the bass lines Rourke came up with The Smiths would've been just another jangly indie band
Hobbayne
Andy Rourke was only 19 or 20 years old when he played on those records. An excellent bassist at such a young age. I was roughly the same age as him and could barely string 2 notes together!

Any idea what bass(es) he was playing on those sessions? His tone on Frankly Mr Shankly and Cemetery Gates is wonderful. ahpook
Echoing what's been said above, Marr gets a lot of praise but Andy Rouke....top notch.
paul_5
Check out 'Rank' (live Smiths album) too - great playing from all (but Mozza sings sharp throughout the entire album) and shows how good they were live.

I wonder what he thinks of this?
Fair enough I should amend that to 'apparently Morrissey doesn't think Andy Rourke or Mike Joyce contributed to the success of The Smiths that much'. Certainly not enough to justify what they were awarded in their court case, which Mozza is still quite bitter about going by his comments about the judge in his autobiography. miles'tone
Andy Rourke was the one and only bass player on all the recordings. Freaky musical skills for someone so young at the time.
