silverfoxnik
Just wondering if anyone has seen/heard this yet before I put aside some time to listen to it? http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07vwg5w The first 30 seconds or sound promising, but I always worry when journalists who are supposed to be informing and/or educating us use a generic term like 'Rock' and then play a disco song, in this case 'Another One Bites The Dust'. Booooooom
Interesting listen Nick with very little reference to modern rock/pop (I don't recall a bass guitar being mentioned). It concentrates on the physics of sound and importance of the bass part in the development of music. This, however, may describe my playing better...😉 http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/5C7VQGPHs31YJPPYfLP3X81/when-does-noise-become-music

The Noise article is really interesting too. Listened to the podcast in the end and really enjoyed it. As you say, the section on the physics of sound was quite amazing. There's clearly a lot more to the role of the bass in music than I ever thought!
TrevorR
The Listening Service is now one of my regular weekly podcasts. Always fascinating even if in an area of music I'm not hugely interested/engaged in. The How To Write A National Anthem one is hilarious. The Noise one is very good. But other ones like Mozart Hero or Villain, The Power of Love Songs, Repetition and Starts etc are all really interesting. The one on Rachmaninov's 2nd piano concerto was a fascinating study of how music moves our emotions AND of snobbery in musical circles. Radio 3 programme so a bias towards using classical music as an example but no worse than that... You could use 30 minutes of your time in many less productive ways.
