5 string semi ac/hollow body basses? Something fat?

Given I'm usually a P-bass player...

I recently got an acoustic bass which I enjoy playing when sat about at home. One thing I particularly like are the dimensions of the body re resting securely on one's thigh, and generally having a big thing to put my arm over. Oo er missis, no really, shut up at the back.

In fact I can imagine having something like that as my main bass, BUT I wouldn't be comfy having an acoustic as the #1. So I'm wondering if there are more electricky basses with a nice 3" or so depth. And on top of that I'd want a 5 string as I could more easily justify it as an additional member of the clan.

Dream bass is a Warwick Jonas Hellborg, but I'd rather keep my 2nd kidney for emergencies.

So far I have a shortlist of one (and I fear it's a bit too slim to be different, dunno). Are there alternatives?

Google the following if you haven't already:

Warwick Star Bass, Godin Acoustibass 5, Ibanez Artcore series and Fender Starcaster (not made in a 5 though)

I played on one of those Ibanez artcore ones; pretty nice to play - the relicing isn't the most convincing but they are decent basses. I'd love a Warwick Starbass too!

Bear in mind that the Ibanez is short scale. I'd want to hear how good that low B string is before buying one.

Most semi-acoustic and hollow bodied basses have slim bodies - certainly all the ones that I've played are. I own a MiK Pro-series Warwick Starbass which is 1.5" deep at the sides and a little bit more in the middle with the (slightly) arched top and back.

Incorrect string number, but THIS is awesome!

And it makes the Deep 5 look cheap!

Doesn't Thundercat play a fat semi?

That's a massive 6 string Ibanez-custom-shop-available-to-endorsees-only job.

The aforementioned Artcore would be the closest match, although I don't think Thundercat's is short scale.

I've got the Ibby Artcore, traded it for my Warwick Star Bass as it looks a bit more 'roots' and suits the Americana Band I'm in.
The B string is fine, given I've swapped the rounds out for some flats.
True about the relicing, it is a bit machine-like from close up but joe public cares not one jot...

Lock the thread, there is nothing more to say. If the owner of that ever happens to bump into this thread then please get in touch because I want to buy this bass.

Have a listen to Pertybass on YouTube. Although he's fitted a tone styler to his, that starbass sounds great and the mod really seems to give a wide range of sounds.

I'm also smitten by the Deep 5! I found a used one a couple of years ago for peanuts but the pawn shop (!) wouldn't ship it. I was very tempted to get on a plane to go over for it.

Hi there may a stupid question.

What kind of music will a Hollow body bass acommodate

Best regards

Just about anything really.

My MiK Warwick StarBass is on the tracks from my band's mini album The MonsterPussy Sessions

And for a complete contrast remember that Peter Hook of New Order and Simon Gallup of The Cure both use Eccleshall hollow-bodied basses.
