Simon
2nd bass for sale following the Overwater to fund a Sadowsky is this rare CBS Fender bass. As talked about in the Fender Bass book (page 79). A transitional Fender Jazz, '78 neck - dot and bound fingerboard, three bolt neck joint and headstock adjust. 1978 decal and serial number on headstock 'S 8' - body most likely early 80's. The book confirms that builders CBS used parts to deplete all inventories in the factories. A rare build! When I brought the bass it had active EMG's. I've swapped them out for all passive Nordstrand NJ4SV's (very tasty pickups!). Condition is generally very good. Has knocks on the body, but nothing too bad. The top neck area has some marks on three of the frets. Appears to be in the lacquer, does not affect play, and doesn't feel bad (see pics). Comes with moulded hard case. £700. Not inc. postage. kevin_lindsay
Hi Simon - I am sure someone will snap the bass up very quickly. Do you still have the clips of you demoing the Nordstrand pickups in situ on this bass?
Simon
Re: Joe & others by PM. I'm not sure what i'm after price-wise. I wanted to see what the offers would be to give me an idea. Hi Kev! You reminded me about those clips actually! Also worth noting that the E tuner is not original Fender, it's identical but has Schaller on the back.

Jebo1
Hi mate, I can't be bothered with offers and things, I don't mean to be rude. What's your cash price for this? I'd be looking at somewhere around £600 to £700 with the play wear and the changed pickups. Obviously depends on the condition and whether there's a case etc. Is this near your figure? wateroftyne
I've only seen one other d'n'b early 80s J in the flesh, at Howard's in Newcastle. They look lovely.

Jebo1
The quote is asking whether, due to the basses 'rareness' (i.e. that they only made a few in a transitional period), is it actually of any value to collectors or is it just a bass cobbled together from odd bits in the factory and therefore a bit rubbish. I'd say it's not really collectible, and not really an investment, as it looks too much like the 80s basses from Fender which sucked, but with the bound and dotted board it really stands out to me as a great bass, and for playabilities sake is worth a go. Good thing is, the seller seems to know that, and apart from living in the 'Mare, seems ok It's not too different in construction planning from the slab-bodied mid 60s Precisions that Entwistle used to use. Mind you, there were only 19 of those, and it seems they all ended up with touring bands. T-Rex, the Who etc.

I remember it well because for some reason I couldn't find a screwdriver that day so I used the tip of the blade on a new penknife to put the control plate back on, and of course the knife snapped shut on my index finger and I needed stitches. Simon
[quote name='thisnameistaken' post='310938' date='Oct 21 2008, 12:42 AM']FWIW I fitted an active EMG replacement set to a Jazz I had in the '90s and managed to squeeze the battery into the control cavity with no routing. As you can see from the backshot of the bass there is no routing for the battery. It was contained underneath the control plate.
