thodrik
I just noticed that Bass Direct have started stocking these. http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Kalium_strings.html Does anybody have experience with them? My only knowledge of them is from them constantly being brought up in Talkbass threads. The gauges on display look a bit ridiculous. I love heavily downtuned doom music but is there any real benefit for being able to tune to the octave below a low E string? The hybrid drop F sharp set is a bit tempting. Basically the same as my four string set of 120-50 D'addarios tuned to C sharp standard with a low F sharp string instead of a B string. The question is, how the hell will a 174 gauge string fit on my string saddle? I presume that they are tapered?
Guest ixlramp
This thread may help http://basschat.co.u...kalium-strings/ They are certainly tapered, you can't string through-body, you'll need a top-loading, slot-loading bridge Technical diagram with measurements is here http://store.kaliums...ator/index.html Because the sets are for Dingwall i assume they are the 'medium' 36"/37" length. The benefit is of course down to taste, but E0 is totally practical since only the 2nd harmonic at 40Hz, and higher harmonics, are important to reproduce.
They haven't started stocking them, I believe that is the last of the stock they had. Apparently they have been trying to get more in from Kalium but having no luck. I ordered a set through Bass Direct what must be 6 months ago now (stock request, not paid for), I'v lost hope they will ever arrive. Iv also had problems getting any response from Kalium, and the last order I had from them (shared order with another member on here) was completely wrong. Good strings, but not worth the hassle sadly. Try Newtone.
thodrik
Thanks folks, I must have missed it when Bass Direct started stocking them. I did try a couple of sets of Newtones which were very nice, but I thought that the £18 120-50 D'addarios I was using previously were as good, if not better, than the 'custom wound' strings I got from Newtone for about twice the price.
