toneknob
Hello! I've been listening to Tame Impala's live album Live Versions, can any of the effects experts here tell me what the effect is we're hearing in the main riff? Have a listen to this, it's most obvious at say 1m53s to 2m10s here. Thanks! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzOw7ixjoss
Danuman
I was kind of hoping somebody would chime in before me... It's such a familiar sound, but I can't put my finger on it. Here's how I would do it: neck humbucker with a sprinkle of fuzzy type overdrive into a hot amp. Probably roll off the treble just a smidgen. Makes me think of the sound Queens of the Stone Age used for Monsters in the Parasol, which I never did quite achieve. Something that almost but not quite suggests a cocked wah... Musicman20
Sorry I can't hear the above, but if it's the warm driven QOTSA type tone, google the Stonedeaf PDF pedal...
Danuman
Heh. That seems like a really cool pedal! (Nice to know my instincts were right, what with the sweepable notch filter...) The Tame Impale sound is definitely different, though. Sorry, hope that won't cause any confusion!
toneknob
Thanks to replies so far! Will seek out that QotSA recording.
RhysP
Just sounds like some lo-fi old vintage amp to me, can't hear any effects as such.
dogload
I know it's a bit late, but there are at least two guitars playing that riff. I'd hazard a guess that there is Kevin Parker's Rickenbacker 330 plus a Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster. They sound like they're on neck pickups and tone rolled off, going through some fuzz or other - maybe germanium?
JapanAxe
Maybe something like this - mid-heavy overdriven amp?
