I've got way too many basses and I need the space. What's the best way of storing them? Attic in hard case? :Leaving the strings on seems obvious.

I'm always a bit nervous about attic storage. My attic can get to well over 40ºC in the summer and down to about 4ºC in the winter, as it's cold loft insulated.

Depends on the attic. If it's the type that Bartelby mentioned, then for me it's a no no, whether cased or not.

Somewhere with reasonably consistent temperature and just as importantly, consistent humidity, is where I want my instruments stored.

Are you talking about an attic room or loft space?

If you mean an attic room I would imagine that's OK. A loft is very different. The floor of our loft space is very well insulated which means in the roof space the heat in summer and cold in winter is very extreme. That would not be good for the storage of musical instruments. Your loft may be different.

I'm afraid that my solution to space problems and too many basses would be to sell some of them.

The others are right, of course about leaving a bass in an un-heated loft space with the insulation under the bass - so it's out in the cold. Something you could do is remove the insulation in an area of the loft and then lay new insulation OVER the top of the bass; in a case, of course.

Even better would be to see if a relative or GOOD friend has space to leave one or 2 basses in their house.

I might be able to help of course

That's a good idea!

I have storage spaces available for Wal fretlesses and 80s BC Rich Mockingbirds...
