Rocker
I love the sound of a bass but am increasingly finding it difficult to practice my bass playing. It is the lack of melody content in the bass that is the problem. Bass is essential in a band situation but how do you practice songs, songs that only feature root G, C and D notes? Even if it is more challenging than that, it is still hard to practice. All suggestions and advice welcomed. Thanks.
synthaside
Bass is more a supporting instrument in part its like drums its only sometimes used on its own .... there's loads of inspiration out there , for stuff to play usually if you hear a song and feel motivated to move the rhythm section is doing that for you , I'd say bass is the glue of music without it you have guitar doing stuff and drums doing stuff its not connected. That being said It can be tricky If your not ready for a band situation but want to get better at playing stuff, with other instruments, heres a few tips to get over this hump My first suggestion would be , Songster ... it's a service for learning songs, and playing along with the tab , its great for getting your basic chops in time https://www.songsterr.com/ , I'm still guilty of using it when i don't know a cover which I need to learn quickly . My next would be a cheeky one, some helpful people have uploaded to youtube's of all the Rocksmith stuff https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJWWEgzjNfHixUSpnUGcixc3ZgG1CArOD good luck
ambient
Maybe play along to recordings of the songs ? Bass doesn't have to be unmelodic, lots of rock bassists play very melodically.

casapete
You definitely need some way of playing along with songs / tracks to make sense of what you're doing. I use a small mixer for both recorded stuff and my bass, and then into headphones. Lines which sound dull and uninspiring come alive when put into context. bonzodog
Playing along to drum loops is great. There are lots of free apps that you can get on your mobile that you can play along to.
Phil Starr
You are spoiled for choice. Playing along with songs of your choice and the right level of difficulty has long been one of the ways of practicing, It's fun but easy to persuade yourself you are better than you really are. Once you have a song nailed drum machines are great tutors. Keeping great time and counting bars are the things that benefit and you can develop improvisation skills just by changing the beat but keeping the same chord structure as a song you know well. Learning fast songs at a reduced speed and building up tempo is good as is repetition of a tricky lick to get it nailed and smooth There's so much stuff on the internet including some decent online tutors https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ic1yWJNhxXQ https://www.youtube.com/user/devinebass https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGyPWBc1GFIxRaoWrfR_vRA Don't forget Ultimate Guitar which has midi files of many of their tabs that you can play back at any speed and mix the bass right up and everything else down. I find the best way to do most of this is with a simple mixer and headphones which will take the output from any source with a headphone outlet and mix your bass and that signal. I use the Zoom B1ON which also has a tuner and a built in drum machine https://www.gak.co.uk/en/zoom-b1on-bass-effects-pedals/104730, it does loads of other stuff too

mrtcat
Bass is more about rhythm and underpinning the melody so playing along with and getting tight to drum patterns is where the fun lies. You can use a drum machine or loop. I also use youtube drummers to play along with when I'm practicing theory. lumbeat has some good basic beats at different speeds and doesnt cost anything. If you want something particular to play along to then karaoke-version is a good place to buy tracks. You can remove the bass parts before downloading the tracks and as you can download a track you've paid for as many times as you like you can isolate drums if you want or even isolate bass so you can hear the bassline better. josie
All the above - a drum machine is great for working on solid rhythm, and I find I can keep working on something simple for half an hour, when without it I would have given up after 10 minutes. YouTube to play along with (but choose carefully, don't try to copy basslines that are too complex). I sometimes record my teacher's guitar line for a song we're working on and practice with that between lessons. My usual duo partner, who has little time for meeting up to practice together, sometimes records his guitar and vocal and emails it over for me to work with - that way I have plenty of time to develop something that works with his exact interpretation of a song. The material for the Registry of Guitar Teachers bass grades comes with good audio and a structure for getting the most of it, even if you don't want to enter any of the exams. The exams are also a great source of structured learning and motivation - everything in the syllabus is there because it will make you a better player. But you'll need a RGT-registered teacher. http://www.rgt.org/index.php Hope this helps.

It will open up a new world. Regardless of genre you don't have to limit yourself to root notes. There's no excuse theses days for unproductive practice. There are so many top notch tutorials on YouTube and free apps, practicing should be productive. If you're having fun ,more than likely your playing stuff you already know, which will get you nowhere. CrackerJackLee
Rocker, I sense that you already play along with recordings. I bought one of these and they're great. But I think you are looking for formal exercises that provide interest. The spider exercises are great but monotonous sounding. Have you tried the James Jamerson "Igor" exercise? https://www.youtube....h?v=chvin4h8jA4 https://www.youtube....h?v=_Z4oi6VnN7I Try scale sequences, scale intervals and modes and triad exercises on the major and minor scales. But every tutorial book has little songs. Try nursery rhymes, folk tunes and classical excerpts by note or by ear. Make a list and run through them daily. I have a list of bass riffs, fills, runs, licks and grooves with the keys and BPM's that I run through by ear and by note. Once with fingers and then plectrum. It's fun. A list of songs with interesting bass lines. I'm sure that you have yours. Kevin1712
The piece of software I use the most is called Transcribe. This allows you to slow down tracks which is really useful when trying to work out what is going on. You can also isolate sections and repeat them over and over until you get it right. It's not free but well worth the money.
