So

I bought this rather wonderful looking no name P from Karlfer, based solely on the colour of the body...and the fact it weighed as much as a pregnant sparrow.

After tossing a couple of ideas around with him in a windy service station car park re what I might do with it, he nagged me into making a build diary so he could tell me where I was going wrong!!

here is a 'before' or two....

Karl mentioned one of the tuners was a bit stiff, and looking at them I noticed the flat plate 'spring' on the G tuner had worked its way loose, as can just be seen in the 4th pic. repairable, but not an issue as I have some Mex tuners in the parts box that will fit, albeit the screw holes don't line up. the offending ones already have glued cocktail sticks in situ.

He also mentioned the tone knob was completely shot, a close scrutinise revealed a dry joint on the tone Cap. Not that it matters as I have a Kiogon loom on its way as I type, bought 2nd hand from here.

The last pic shows 1 dink that has gone through the finish, I'll be rummaging though the Boss's nail varnish to see if anything matches I think :)

The pickup sounds ok, but a couple of pole pieces are starting to rust, I have a Mex PU going spare, and an SB3, with other options also being considered, but I want to keep this cheap so I'm guessing one of the 2 I have will go in.

The whole face of the headstock has been varnished, which I don't like, and that decal will have to go too. Any puntastic takes on Fender precision bass gratefully received. B)

I have an idea for a custom pickguard, but discussions needed with TimAl of this parish are needed before I reveal anything.

More dismantling pics to follow!

A better view of the dodgy spring clip on the tuner

It looks like some extra wood was removed post painting, to allow the pickup to fit

Yup definitely a bit of tweaking here, strangely though, only 1 set of holes for the PU mounting screws.

Slightly more annoying the pickups are a non standard size, both the Mex and the SB3 have different hole centres to the original pickup

No distinguishing marks in the neck pocket

A bit difficult to see here, but the cap had a dry joint connection on the middle tag, hence no tonal variation, pots look a bit weedy too!

Splashed some lemon oil on the neck, which sucked it up like a dehydrated camel! another application later methinks!!

More pics as some parts come in.

Bloody Hell, didn't take you long Russ :o .

I put 3 coats of Lemon oil on last night, greedy little mare ain't she.
Sorry about the issues fella, I never got round to taking it apart.

Wonder, with the pup size issue, if you try the original pup with John's loom???

Absolutely LOVED the scratchplate idea!!!!

Subscribed :D

As far as decals go I had a no name bass with a "Fecker Pretender Bass" decal. From a distance it looked exactly like Fender Precision Bass as the fonts were correct.
I got it off eBay but pretty sure Rothko and Frost can do anything you like.
I am pretty sure this is the the very same bass put up F/S again.

I really don't know why the more elegant pun of "Imprecision Bass" never caught on in the comedy logo world. I thought it was pretty funny.

A "Fumble" Imprecision bass would be cool

  • 1 month later...
 It seems I have neglecting this build for a while...blame Christmas, and....stuff

So, I acquired a 2nd hand Kiogon loom from a fellow basschatter

The new CTS pots were a squeaky tight fit in the narrow routing of the body, but fit they did!

New tuners were donated from my Mex P which now has upgrades on

Headstock transfer finally in place

With the final weight of the bass being a gnats over 7.5lb, the small print, which reads 'just what the Dr ordered' seems most appropriate!

After much work from our friend Tim at Scratchit, I finally managed to get the pickguard I wanted, shows off the purple burst nicely I feel.

Add to that some purple topped knobs, my last thumb rest, which was one of a batch made by a fellow basschatter a while back, and some Fender flatwounds, and we are good to go!
Oh BTW I've put the original PU's back in for the moment, they are pretty good actually, I still have the couple of others lying around for future fiddling!

At rehearsal last night, got a very nice tone through my Reidmar and BF retro 2x10. I declare myself well chuffed with the result!!!
