Mykesbass Posted November 25, 2016 Posted November 25, 2016 I know Youtube demos are severely limited by the sound quality, but I've listened to a lot of envelope filter reviews, and to my ears the MXR is by far my preferred (non-boutique) pedal, but running it a close second was a much cheaper Mooer. I had the opportunity to try one last night at rehearsal and was very disappointed. I got very little effect from the unit, and although it was all very quick, I did try running through a lot of settings. Now, the big question, how much influence does the bass have on this type of effect. Nearly all the demos are done on Jazz basses with roundwounds, I play a fretless P Bass with flats. Am I trying to achieve the impossible with this set-up? Thanks in advance. Quote
No. 8 Wire Posted November 25, 2016 Posted November 25, 2016 My p bass with flats sounds great with an envelope filter. No issues. Couple of things to try: Is the pedal the first thing your bass sees? If in the fx loop or behind other pedals it may not trigger. I take it you turned the sensitivity all the way up? Could be that you have a duff pedal? Quote
Mykesbass Posted November 25, 2016 Author Posted November 25, 2016 Thank No. 8 - pedal is the first thing, and is in line, not in fx loop. Yes, turned sensitivity all the way up. Good to hear that it does work with the P and flats though. Got the day off, will set up and have another play around. Cheers, Mike Quote
Sibob Posted November 25, 2016 Posted November 25, 2016 My main setup involves a P with flats and an MXR envelope, sounds great!! Yeah the only real difference is how the bass triggers the effect. So i'd argue similar tones are possible from an envelope with a J or P, but the pedal settings will be quite different! Si Quote
Japhet Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 I use a Tokai Hardpuncher (which to all intents and purposes is a P) with flats. Sounds good through my Aguilar Filter Twin which I prefer to the MXR which I also have. Quote
Mykesbass Posted November 27, 2016 Author Posted November 27, 2016 Thanks everyone - will hang on and keep looking for a used MXR. Quote
dannybuoy Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 This is what you need: https://www.andertons.co.uk/p/FWONKBETA/filter-pedals/mr-black-fwonkbeta-envelope-filter-pedal Mr Black had a 2-for-1 deal the other day too but I think that has now passed unforunately! Quote

GisserD Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 I think im right in saying that flats have less high frequency content (especially old ones) so the filter will not be able to cut the frequencies that arent there to begin with, so the filter sweep will be less noticeable. I love my MXR and although i have 5 filters. its the only one permanently on the board. I do notice however how much more prominent the sweep is with fresh strings. hope that helps Quote
Funky Ghost Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Out of curiosity have you given the 3Leaf Proton a listen/go? I've been pretty pleased with mine for many years now and they are more than reasonably priced. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SukpDuvZyPw Quote
Mykesbass Posted December 26, 2016 Author Posted December 26, 2016 Thanks for the latest replies. Funky Ghost - I like that one. Will check what the UK price. Quote
