Funky Dunky Posted November 26, 2016 Posted November 26, 2016 (edited) Just pulled my JB out of its case for a play and if I fret any note on the E string, anywhere on the neck, it buzzes badly. The open string is fine, the string tension is fine but fretting any note is just bzzzz central. I last played the bass three days ago, it was perfect, made no adjustments, put it back in its case immediately and haven't touched it since. Any ideas as to how/why this has happened and how to fix it? I reckon raising the saddle a touch might help but the action is still perfect and this problem didn't exist the other day. Help! Treb Posted November 26, 2016 Posted November 26, 2016 check neck relief. neck too straight perhaps. Quote
3below Posted November 26, 2016 Posted November 26, 2016 (edited) Where has the bass been? In car overnight, colder room, warmer room etc, anywhere different to usual? Climate changes can cause issues especially if your bass is adjusted to a super low action. I just use 3.5mm (or more) action at 12th fret, cures 99% of issues dead Edited November 26, 2016 by 3below Quote

Shambo Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 My guess would be the seasonal temperature change. Winter is here and even if it's in a case, in a house, it can still be affected. If it were mine, I'd put a touch more relief in the neck as described above, and perhaps remember to turn the truss rod back the other way six months from now. Quote
Treb Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 Since the neck is made of wood (I presume) it will always exhibit some movement. Changes in temperature and humidity will cause a neck to move somewhat. It is not uncommon to have to adjust the neck a bit with the changing of the seasons. Quote

JTUK Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 I think 2 set-ups per year are the norm but some basses need more attention certainly after string changes. I think after 3 days, the bass wasn't put away properly..?? I am anal about packing away basses and pressure on the neck Quote
Burns-bass Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 My vintage Fenders get a set up every 5 years! Quote
bassjim Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 Is it possible that the pay off for a thin and fast bolt on neck is it will move more? Maybe.... If its nothing to do with the relief vrs/plus string height could it be a faulty string?. Quote
NancyJohnson Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 I did a little guffaw at 3.5mm. Yikes. Granted I like my action low and a bit rattly, but a decent twelfth fret action here is 2mm or less. Quote
