NoirBass Posted December 9, 2016 Share Posted December 9, 2016 I've been a gigging bass player for over 25 years, but I've never once played a gig on drums..until last night. Due to a mistake by the agent I somehow got booked onto my regular gig (a blues trio) with two guitar players and me. Trying to work out the best way forward, and after much chin scratching we realised that one of the regular drummers had left a full set of cymbals and some sticks. We set up the house kit and it was decided that one of the guitar players would play my bass and I'd be on drums! i'm no drummer, but kept it really simple and after a fews numbers settled into my new role. I actually really enjoyed it, by the end the gig we had people up dancing and even took a few request. Perhaps I've missed my calling? josie Posted December 9, 2016 Share Posted December 9, 2016 Well done. Any bass player should be used to tuning into what the drummer is doing, but doing it yourself is a whole different ball game. My drummer son has very recently seriously taken up playing bass (inspired partly by me playing, and partly by me going halves with him on the purchase of a new MIA Fender P - oh my poor bank balance ) and he's already better than I am. I guess the bass and drums are very much linked, I know I often listen to the drums on a track before the bass. I'd love to have another go, but this time with a bit of prep - a few stock fills and some stuff to end songs with would have really helped. [/quote] If you really enjoyed it, treat yourself to a couple of lessons. It may help you decide if you want to get into it more and also get you into a practice regime without any bad habits.
