There was a guy who worked for Gretsch called Jimmie Webster that published a book on his tapping technique (he called it his "Touch System) in 1952.

It'll be interesting to see how far back it goes.

To be fair to EVH (who I actually believe is a compete cock), he has never actually claimed he invented the technique, only that he did things with it that hadn't been done before. Which is why the world of rock guitar's collective jaw dropped when 'Eruption' first got played. At risk of sounding like Blue, you perhaps had to have been there to understand the quantum leap in technique this represented. Hendrix redefined the way electric guitar was played, so did EVH.

It's a fair point (and I get the feeling that it's more a case of other people claiming it on his behalf). I was there myself and at the time I was certainly happy to give him credit for it (so to speak... ). I also remember Stanley Jordan, who was developing the technique in a different direction at about the same time but whom nobody seems to remember these days...

Certainly did know it wasn't EVH but I curse whoever did :). Unfortunately tapping and sweep picking have led to the rise of soul less, mechanical fretw***ers across the globe.

Ah yes. That would be this man then...

If I'm honest I'm not really a Gambale fan myself (although I don't have an issue with sweeping as such). As always though, it's not the technique so much as the way it's used.

The problem I have with stanley jordan is that he sounds like two good guitarists rather than one great one - unless you actually know its one person instead of two theres really nothing special about it so hes great to watch but very "meh" to just listen to.

And indeed many do say it of MK but not me. There are many who diss slap bass but I'm not one of them. We all have our musical beefs and one of mine is guitar shredding
So all shredding is bad and all slap is good then?

Of course - this is Basschat, where opinion is fact. :)

I'm sure there was some jazz guy doing it in the 30's!

There were bass players slapping and popping their double basses back in the 30s, easy to find on YouTube.
