RhysP
There was a guy who worked for Gretsch called Jimmie Webster that published a book on his tapping technique (he called it his "Touch System) in 1952.

arthurhenry
Sheehan, Billy Gibbons and Steve Hackett were all doing it before EVH. None of this matters of course.
RhysP
Paganini apparently used a two handed tapping technique on the violin.
MoonBassAlpha
Lots of people apply the technique to playing the piano, apparently.
AustinArto
I like the bit towards the end of the clip where he's using his right hand to tap a bass part and strum the chords, it's a pretty nice feel actually!
Paul S
To be fair to EVH (who I actually believe is a compete cock), he has never actually claimed he invented the technique, only that he did things with it that hadn't been done before. Which is why the world of rock guitar's collective jaw dropped when 'Eruption' first got played. At risk of sounding like Blue, you perhaps had to have been there to understand the quantum leap in technique this represented. Hendrix redefined the way electric guitar was played, so did EVH. [/quote] It's a fair point (and I get the feeling that it's more a case of other people claiming it on his behalf). I was there myself and at the time I was certainly happy to give him credit for it (so to speak... ). I also remember Stanley Jordan, who was developing the technique in a different direction at about the same time but whom nobody seems to remember these days... Barking Spiders
Certainly did know it wasn't EVH but I curse whoever did . Unfortunately tapping and sweep picking have led to the rise of soul less, mechanical fretw***ers across the globe.
SH73
Sure tapping was used by violin players centuries ago x

As always though, it's not the technique so much as the way it's used.

Barking Spiders
Nah, still not persuaded re the virtues of tapping. Jazz /rock fusion? No thanks. To my ears one of the dullest of genres.

Barking Spiders
And indeed many do say it of MK but not me. There are many who diss slap bass but I'm not one of them.
