Hi all,

Recently purchased a Fender Deluxe Active Precision Bass Special, the mexican made ones with 4 controls. It's black with gold pickguard, however I'm looking to get a black pickguard for it. After a bit of extensive research I've found a company that do them, however does anybody on here make pickguards, and if so I would prefer to give business to them...

So can anyone do it?

Cheers,

There is Howard the Bass Doc, a member on here and a true craftsman - http://basschat.co.uk/user/4905-the-bass-doc/

I also had a beautiful pearl plate made for my Matt freeman P by these guys http://www.northwestguitars.co.uk/bass/ and it was outstanding!!

I can endorse Howard's work. Alas, 'tis some time since we last heard from the good man. He was suffering ill health. We can only hope he's still with us. :(

This is our local Tim Allen's site: http://www.originalscratchplates.com/

I can recommend him highly, he's a thoroughly nice bloke and the scratchplate I ordered was spot on. :)

I saw him last week. He sorted out the wiring on my new Geddy Lee Jazz bass and made it a lovely tort plate :D

He was definitely on good form B)

Personally I wouldn't endorse Howard in the slightest. He left me minus a paid for replacement and an original scratch plate. I know he's been ill but I've heard absolutely nothing and gave up many months ago. I've been out of the loop more recently but he has my details. No apology or explanation has been offered.

Jack's Instrument Services in Manchester. They're just about to make me a p/g for exactly the bass you have. Made me one for a P bass recently. Nice job and not that expensive. Google will find them.

It seems the answer is to go round and see him. Which is all well and good if you're in the Tyneside area.

Took everybody's advice and gone for Tim Allen's scratch it, turns out he owns (or used to own) one of these basses and so he has a template ready despite it not being offered on the website. I messaged last night and already have a reply, so think I will go for him, seems all good. Link: http://www.originalscratchplates.com/

Sadly he doesn't do multi-ply guards and I was thinking of a BWB to match my blacked out Tele.

Had literally just messaged the Doc. After seeing some of these comments I may withdraw my request if I do get a response.

I'll pursue the company mentioned before.

Glad I spotted this thread as I was a bit shocked to see the prices of a USA P bass Tortie guard for my bass. Especially as I'm after a darker brown tort rather than bright red.

Of the pickguard makers advertising, how can I be sure that the types they make are exact versions for the instrument required? Or, to put it another way, who can confidently say that they will do a version of say a US Precision plate where the screws are in exactly the right place? I know that said plate does fit one of my instruments and the screw holes line up. I'd be cheesed off if I bought a new plate (in say a non-standard colour) only to find that, having been advertised as a certain type, that it wasn't a correct fit for one reason or another.
