I switch between MM 4 strings with 19 MM spacing and the SR5 with 17.5 without problem - however I don't have large hands so find the spacing for a 5 to be just right - slightly more difficult to slap accurately but still easily possible - and the build quality and playability is just excellent - it's a heavy bass but no problem on a wide strap - and I think it gives it more growl and resonance. Stingrays are a little more quirky maybe but are very versitile. I have a great fretless with a wonderful tone Weight? well typically they both have great balance and vary in weight. Some of the older ones are pretty heavy so it's a case of finding one that your confortable with. There is a wider breadth of sounds on the G&L's but do you need it? It's completely stock with Bart pickups and active/passive selector and I love it to bits. Can get a bit heavy on a long gig though but what 5 string wouldn't? [/quote] As far as I know, they are all 17.5mm and that's been the deal breaker for me. That and the hideous pick guard ☺ I had an MTD Kingston Artist 5 for a while, 19mm spacing and SR5 type pickup. I get the feeling Ernie didnt design the SR5 for slap, but fingerstyle/pick groove playing. How many of us use more than a couple of sounds, even when playing the most versatile instrument? A good player will develop his style and sound and that's what he'll use 99% of the time. So "versatile" usually means we prefer that sound. You choose the bass that feels right and gets the sound you like and then you make it work for you. We've done shoot outs at the SE Bass Bash and the other truism is that one player usually makes all the gear sound more similar than different. An SR5 can't do a jazz bass or a P bass. But a Lakland 55 02 can. Or as close as. An SR5 will always sound like an SR5 regardless of cutting mid's boosting etc etc. A HS or HH still has that tone. But yes, I'll only Guy a 55-01 if it sounds good, but realistically, because I'm restricted to used SR5s because of my budget, there's elements of compromising the spec I want. [/quote] Dunno. It ticks all the aforementioned boxes, although Lake Placid Blue might not be everyone's cup of tea, and to be frank I'm not wild about the colour myself! I had it up for sale a while back, but there were no takers, so I had a few mods done by Charlie Chandler's (changed the pickup, custom scratchplate, coil tap switch, PLEK'd the neck) and I'm very pleased with the result.
