highwayman
This, more than any other piece of music, made me switch to bass... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOxgcYWZzio

Highfox
Restraint, and a monster tone... And a bit less restraint: Leigh Gorman is not my "favourite" bass player by any means, but these two tracks just send shivers down my spine every time I hear them!
Love his playing. He's got to be right up there as one of the best I have seen playing live. Made me go out and buy my first Wal, thinking I could sound like him Edited December 19, 2016 by Highfox
bubinga5
Fantastic Meshell ndegeocello with some laid back playing with some very cool fills. She's so very tasteful and so for the music she creates. That's what makes her one of the best for me. Shes not just a bassist but a true all rounder. http://youtu.be/nVoNlGyPAGw Edited December 19, 2016 by bubinga5

oldbass
Agree with most of the above, some very nice stuff going on etc but, and sorry if I'm doing the worn out record again but for me its Jamerson on nearly everything he ever did. If ever a bass player understood the importance of note placement and emphasis then he's the man for me, guy had an almost a freaky sense of musical understanding and I now find myself literally studying his stuff in minute detail......profound. RhysP
I've been giving this a bit of thought & although there has been lots of stuff that has wowed me over the years I really can't think of anything better than Jaco's playing with Joni Mitchell. bartelby
I'm not a gospel fan but I really like the bass playing in that clip. I like that Jamerson style where there is minimal repetition. Although my music taste leans mainly towards funk, instrumental hip hop and trip hop my #1 album for consistently great basslines is No Rest For The Wicked by New Model Army with Stuart Morrow. It's all there, the intricate lines, the superb tone etc . Here' s a clip of the original line-up at the Marquee in 1985. One of the most underrated/overlooked bands of all time.
Stuart and Moose are both MASSIVELY underrated bassists.
interpol52
I must have listened to this clip a thousand times, and it never gets boring. Firstly because I love funky gospel and secondly there is always a nuance in his playing that I didn't hear before. His bass playing has so many dynamics, you can get and learn so much from it. What I really love just like Pino, there is not one bit of slap bass. Not against it but it shows how amazing bass playing can be without it. it's just off the wall groove playing. And that famous fill at 2.05 minutes. Just a wow peice of bass playing. It's this and Willie Weeks on Donny Hathaways Little Ghetto Boy. What's your favourite.?
That drumming is pretty special too.
Funky Dunky
Andrew Gouche. Every time he plays. Otherworldly, IMO. Bobby Vega absolutely decks me as well. Re: Pino - love his playing but I can't stand the line on Wherever I Lay My Hat, and in that I walk alone because everybody else loves it! gjones
It is fine as a musician, we can hear the count, why are the audience drifting so far in and out of time with it? watch it again and TRY not to listen to the bass part but watch it as a audience member.
I think the 'out of time thing' is just because the singers are a long way from the bass and drums. Having played in a large hall like that one, I know that people singing 50ft away from a drumkit, will always be behind the beat
