Recommendations for P/J pickup set

Hello

I know this is a really wide open question, and probably very subjective, but i'm after some recommendations for a replacement P/J pickup set.

I have a Mike Lull PJ4, and as far as I can tell, it currently has Lindy Fralins made especially for Lull, which are very articulate, bright and open sounding, but i'm after something a bit hotter and more deep/thumpy.

I've previously had Aguilar Hots on a jazz bass which i loved - they were loud, and very full sounding which was kind of my sound, but they don't come in a P/J set unfortunately.

On youtube etc, the normal Aguilars sound fat and punchy in some of the vids, but quite trebly and aggressive in others, so not sure what the true sound is.

Which leads me to stuff like Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders, and whatever the current version of Wizard Thumpers are.

The Lull itself has a very articulate, quite modern tone, which softens to a more vintage feel with the tone rolled off a little, and thats more the kind of sound i'm chasing. Not after super bright or modern sounding etc - more something full and bassy, even vintage sounding - does that even exist?

There's no substitute for trial and error on these things, but any pointers that could save me time/money by steering me in right direction would be good.

I'm using it through a Little Mark 3 and usually and Aguilar or Schroeder cab.

If you liked the Aguilar Hot Jazz pickups why not get that set, then also get the AG4P Hot Precision pickup, and just flog the neck Jazz pickup?

Alternatively you could contact Herrick pickups - Martin, the owner is a member on here, he would be able to advise on what would work best for your requirements:

The EMG PJ set is a powerful set with a big punchy low end, though you will see countless comments online about the pickups sounding sterile and flat. Which is utter nonsense.

One for sale on here too ;)

I have PJ on most of my basses.
I really like these http://www.hot-rodpickups.com/nightrain-87-pj-bass-pickup-set-655-p.asp
I have them on a Charvel and gig it. The pups are like slightly hot traditional Fender. Nice detail and articulation when used together.
Service from HotRod is just as good as Wizard.
Also, they're British.

The Nordy P is excellent. I have one in my Valenti and it's paired with a Bareknuckle J that suits it well, nice serendipitous pairing.

Another recommendation for Martin's work. Made a set for a friend of mine who sold the bass on the basis of the p/ups alone.

Also it's good to support the membership in their endeavours and to have more resources available for us all.

Solid advice already in here. From my experience, if its cheaper ones you want, then Entwistle make great pickups for the money. If not, give Martin a bell.

I've just put an entwhistle pbxn in a old tokai p/j and imo they sound fantastic for a heavy flatwound r&b sound. £16 quid!

I have a Spector NS-4cr that has EMG PJ in it and I really like it. Just as said above, it is NOT sterile, flat or hifi. Lots of low end, great mids and sweet high. I run it the EQ bypassed most of the time and it is great as it is. (obviously that fact that it is in a Spector also helps ;-) )

I have recently had very good results with other EMG's as well, especially with the new X series. So if I was on the market for a PJ setup, I'd try their PJ X.

Also the Geezer Butler sig is a great passive pickup from EMG, too.

I'm not really and EMG fanboy but lately I had very good results using their products. Also quite easy to buy (and flip if they don't work for you)
