markdavid
Am thinking of adding an active pre amp to my bass to fatten the sound a little, possibly something like this, http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/page/shop/fl...roduct_id/17272 Ive never added a pre amp to a bass before , will i be able to have this fitted to my bass with out purchasing any other parts? how much do you think it will cost to get a music shop to fit it? The bass I want to add it to is my squier p bass special with the passive seymour duncan quarter pounders

Have you considered something a little more tailor made, which although a little more you can fit it yourself and save on the luthier fees. JPJ
+1 on the John East link. I put one of John's bass & treble stacks along with his mid stack into my P bass project (see the builds thread). Needed a fair bit of space, but as I was building my bass myself, I was able to remove a bit more wood and make space for the electronics. I also put in a seperate battery box which helped. Dragonlord
Well, if you're interested I have an outboard Aguilar preamp for sale for much less than the one you're looking at, and it's in pedal form, that is you can just place it on your amp and not drill any holes in your bass. It's the same as Aguilar's OBP-1 onboard preamp, only in a box. PM me or check the classifieds if you're interested. If not, well, sorry for hijacking this thread, but I think you should consider outboard preamps anyway if you don't want to purchase other parts, drill holes etc.
Dragonlord
OK, now that it's not 3:39 am I can give a few more options for an outboard preamp: except aguilar, there is one from sadowsky and from fodera. There is also a kinda rare bartolini one for sale at TB, but I wouldn't recommend bart electronics - that's why I picked up the aguilar, so that I can bypass the bart preamp in my dingwall and go through the aguilar. I decided to get a glockenklang onboard preamp though, that's why the aggie has to go.

Vasquez Rich
Try the EMG line of bass pre-amps, they come in a variety of flavours depending on the pots that you have on your bass. Fitted one in my previously passive Warwick.. works nicely. Richard

bassbloke
If it were me, I'd opt for the Aguilar for the simple reason that you can use it on any bass and it won't cost anything to fit. Also, the only easy way to add that preamp to a P -bass is to hope there's sufficient body routing underneath the scratchplate to house the preamp and battery clip. the shape of the P-bass scratchplate means you have to stick the battery below the pickup, so battery changes would involve removing a dozen screws. You'd also have to wrap the battery and wedge it under the plate to stop it moving about. Too much hassle.
