Chorus is an effect, compression is processing. Neither are tone.

Ok,I didn't mention tone, nor say anything about whether compression and chorus are effects or processing.

Not sure what you're getting at....did you mean to reply to the OP ?

Well the thread reads, "How do I get this tone" I wasn't sure why chorus and compression were mentioned as they don't give anyone tone.

I can hear a chorus effect, but is that all?

I think you're hearing a very Stingray sound, which can almost sound like two basses playing at the same time - the trebly 'click' and then more usual bassy sound.

Have a listen to 'Kyoto Song' at 21.40 ....a similar bass sound maybe ? That's compression & chorus, maybe some flanger

Look at the youtube vid, The Cult Live at the Lyceum.

The Stingray tone. But with what? Chorus and some delay perhaps?

Pre-EB StingRay, brand new strings, Boss CE-2 chorus pedal and you're there! :)

Chorus and compression are tone shapers...which i think is what the OP was asking.

In my opinion chorus and compression are effects and have nothing to do with tone. Tone comes from your fingers.

Maybe the proper question should have been "What effects do I use to get my bass to sound like this?"

I refuse to get drawn into this nonsense again.

Everybody knew what he meant. Tone and sound are interchangeable in common usage I would say even if it doesn't meet the definition.

Back on topic ... Jamie used Boss pedals, so matski's suggestion of a Boss CE-2 is a good one. When Jamie joined Death Cult (shortly to become The Cult) as bassist, he switched from lead guitar and gave most of his pedals to the bands guitarist Billy Duffy. He still uses most of them to this day.
