Sadly eBay is full of complete and utter morons these days.

This - I've given up selling anything on eBay because every other transaction turns into a fiasco like this.

Good luck in resolving it! :)

For future reference, brand new bass strings £1.71 plus 99p postage.

Did the ad say old/used bass, brand new strings. If not, file under fackwit. As others have said, unless a bass comes with the exact same brand/gauge of strings I use, they`re straight off, irrespective of newness, and a set of my preferred will be fitted.

Ha! :)

Well, I was putting together one of the basses that I want to sell, and in this case I had to put new strings. It had been disassembled since I had it refinished (what a waste of a refinish!) and I had to put strings... so I put a new set of Nickel Rotosounds because I had a couple of them and I've gone off nickel strings. :P

How many times have you used a public loo and seen someone finish, and just walk out without washing their hands ?

The first thing I do when buying a used bass is strip it down, clean it and put new strings on.

My guitarist saw a guy from what seemed to be the band before us (pub gig, this one) do exactly that and was telling us about it, when said guy approaches us wanting to know who the bass player was. He had tripped on the stairs and damaged his bass, and was wondering whether he could use mine for soundcheck and then run back home (we were playing in their town) to get another.

Oh, how they laughed at me...

Yep, got a set on the way, has to be worth a try at that price.

FWIW I am the buyer. And these are the strings.

I have bought every single bass I have ever owned used and have never encountered a set as dead rubbery and useless.

I'm a considerate ebayer and went so far as to buy from Jamie direct to save him ebay fees. So I was understandably a bit miffed to receive a bass with undisclosed finish wear and gross strings, simply because I would never sell a bass in such a manner without being fully honest about such things.

Undisclosed finish wear would be something else (what level are you talking), but if the worst thing on a bass that came off ebay were the strings being like that I wouldn't be unhappy. I am used to getting things with more damage than was mentioned, which is why I try to make sure I describe all the scratches.

Putting new strings on can often be a waste of time / money too. I bought something recently and the seller put on a new set of Rotosound Steels in a 50-110 gauge. I didn't ask for this, he just thought it would be a nice idea.

I don't like Rotosounds, rarely use steel and generally have 40-95's on. The Rotos came off immediately and went into my 'spares' box.

Can I "have" them please? Heeheehee. Just to experiment really.

I actually pulled the eBay ad as I was contemplating keeping the bass, the buyer contacted me after the fact and asked what it would take for me to sell it.

Hahahahaha! Just goes to show how greedy folk often shoot themselves in the foot on a deal. My advice would be to photograph the instrument without strings (but available on request at no charge) and put it up again. See what he offers you then.

On reflection maybe not... it could make folk think you are hiding a potential fault.

Sorry but I think it's all been said. Buyer beware. Just curious, what strings would you fit by choice yourself?

In future, when buying, to avoid disappointment, ask for lots of close up photos so you are sure what you are buying is what you want.

You may risk annoying the seller, but if they really want a sale and are genuine they'll be happy to do this.

Or they'll sell it to someone else.

YMMV.

IMO it's a given you'll change the strings on a secondhand bass. As long as the bass itself is satisfactory or as described then I don't see the problem. As others have alluded to, I'd always, always change the strings even if they were relatively fresh!

Either this guy is a total novice or, as everyone so far has said, he is trying to con you for a new set of strings.

Most people, certainly the players who are any good, will change the set up and strings on a bass as soon as they get it and before they do anything else. I also check the intonation. I bought a bass just before Christmas and it had newish strings on, which I wasn't expecting. I have the set I was going to put on still waiting in the bag but I wouldn't even have mentioned it to the seller if the bass had turned up sporting a totally dead set.

Then there's the battery. If the bass is active I always change it. That's the point where I know I'm good to gig with confidence in the new instrument.

Those strings are in pretty bad condition...

To be fair, every single bass I have bought on BC has been sold again because it had small defects that were not mentioned and had some sort of effect on the bass.
[/quote]
To be fair if I was selling a bass with those strings I would have put "needs new strings" in the description. Those strings are fit for no purpose than to prove the bass works IMHO
