Just been watching some YouTube clips of Paul McCartney and very struck by his strange hybrid technique. He uses his thumb but also his fingers and works his hand like he's holding a pick (but he isn't). Amazed he played all those wonderful basslines like that. Can anyone tell me how he does it?

He started off using a pick. as he played guitar first. i'm sure i have seen him using a pick on some songs. maybe he uses his nail.

Paul uses his thumb in a downstroke motion, try to keep your nail as short as possible to get that rubbery sound!

In THIS video at around 1:06, you can see the technique he uses, although the attack that he uses is slightly exaggerated for video purposes.
