xgsjx
My Bro has had 2 of these for years (he bought them off our uncle, who bought them new back in the 60s). Used to use them for PA all the time, but he doesn't use them anymore. A couple of weeks ago I got one off him to try out as a bass amp. It's had a recent service, but needs 2 valves (KT88) & I need to build/buy a cab to use with it. What I find most interesting, is that there is very little on the internet about Radiovox Amps, a couple of old radios, but not a sniff of info about Radiovox Sound Systems (other than one person saying that he thinks they were for PA). Here's a pic for proof... I'm planning on giving it a cosmetic refurb. Which is simply repainting the case & polishing up the handles with some steel wool. This thing weighs a ton. But if it sounds good, I have a drummer.
Low End Bee
That looks like it's straight from the set of Thunderbirds. I'd leave the case unpainted. It looks cool as it is.
Happy Jack
You really, really need to label those controls with Dymo tags. Be imaginative ... http://www.funklogic.com/palindrometer
StephenYork
That looks seriously cool! Leave the paint as is. Would love to see some photos of the workings.
xgsjx
That Dymo tag's been on there for a good 30+ years. It's an antique! I'll get some inner pics this week. Edited January 17, 2017 by xgsjx
Chienmortbb
Does Mag suggest a phono input?
xgsjx
Does Mag suggest a phono input?
I believe it may do, as these were used in a pair for left & right channels coming from a mixer (DJ type).
xgsjx
Here's a pic for scale next to a full size 88 key keyboard. And here's some interior views. xgsjx
Here's my new rig. 4x10 cab courtesy of fellow BCer, Stealth. The amp weighs about 3 times as much as the cab. Might get a trolley for it! taunton-hobbit
Back in the day, City Electronics (north London) used to build 'band speakers' and they ran Audax (audix?) amplifiers, made in Kent with them....finished in Blue Hammerite.........I can't remember anything over 100watt, but it was a long time ago (about 1966)........ Just had a proper look at the Beast, the Front panel is definitely showing a Leeds company, so my 'guess' was a bit off - sorry! xgsjx
There's 2 of them. My brother has the other one. I found out that they were hand built in a shop called Magnum Sounds in Wishaw back in the 60s.
taunton-hobbit
I'd get it checked by a proper tech, sorted as needed & use it - I would most certainly NOT mess around with the cosmetics or tart it up/repaint or twiddle in any way - it's rare....... the iron alone is worth a small fortune !
xgsjx
It was regularly serviced by the chap who built it. He serviced it about 5-6 months ago & it hasn't been used since. The wee tag on top is his service report. Needs 2 valves replacing. He's since went into retirement.
xgsjx
Used the rig at volume tonight. Clean tone sounds superb with the rest of the band playing. I was expecting not to have much in the way of top end, but when I turned it up, the sound was crystal clear & tons of low end too! Sounds very different to the Markbass rig I used to have, but just as good. Tried a little dirt & it sits under the solo guitar nicely. I'm a happy chappy, even with the weight. Porpoise face
We had a Radiovox PA system in the 60’s. The amp exactly that colour metallic blue and Speakers to match. Each speaker can had 2x12inch speakers. Not sure if it had a high frequency speaker. Great robust piece of kit I wonder what happened to them and where were they made?
