28mistertee Posted January 21, 2017 Share Posted January 21, 2017 Does anyone know if it has any negative impact on the neck by using the Hercules style wall hangers? Read mixed things on the net, some say none whatsoever as the strings are higher tension than a bracket holding it by the headstock. Others say can definitely cause warping. All my basses are hung this way, I have a couple with fret buzzes but I'm assuming this is just climate change and others still play perfectly. Can anyone give any accurate information on this? fftc Posted January 21, 2017 Share Posted January 21, 2017 Accurate information may be a bit of a push! I doubt anyone has done proper scientifically controlled experiments. What you can get freely is a lot of conjecture, opinion, cod engineering statements put across as fact etc, etc. My opinion is that the weight of your average bass is not enough to damage a well made neck or headstock. If your bass is inordinately heavy, or your neck or headstock is badly designed or made (no names) then you may be pushing the boundaries a bit more. I hang my Fender with no concerns at all. YMMV. Also the offical line from the White House is now that climate change does not exist Over 10 years of using wall hangers doesn't seem to have caused any warping on the necks of any of my basses & guitars. Never had problems it sometimes needs retuning but as yet has had no adverse affects. The two main guitar shops near me PMT and Guitar Guitar hang most of their guitars and basses on the wall from hangers from the cheap to the boutique and collectables and I guess if there were structural problems with the instruments from doing that they would be the first to change their practice to avoid after sales issues with customers. After a serious attempt to cut down on the amount of basses I have, my collection has grown from 5 at the turn of the year to 8 (4 in, one out). My usual method of storing them is in hard cases stacked up wherever I find room, but that is becoming impractical. So, I am considering wall hangers and empty cases in the loft with a maybe two cases left downstairs for gigs. My question is which wall hangers are preferred? I see Hercules mentioned a lot, and do have a two bass Hercules stand but lost faith in it when it fell over at a gig and tipped my jazz bass into the drum kit! No 4Kg instrument is going to seriously challenge an all-metal wall hanger, and I've used these cheapies for years without a problem. It has nothing to do with the value of these basses. The cheapest bass I have hanging right now cost me £185; the most expensive cost me over £4000. They both hang just fine. More concerning is that the hanger part is invariably covered with a neoprene sleeve. You should be aware that long-term contact with neoprene will gradually damage a nitrocellulose finish. Good point about the neoprene/cellulose issue though, two of my basses are cellulose finish. I could probably avoid the problem with a small sleeve of cloth over the rubber. FinnDave Posted September 18, 2017 Share Posted September 18, 2017 Just been trying to work out how to space the hangers (when I get them!) by laying out all of my basses (except a Thunderbird which is currently with a local guitar tech). I think I can fit 8 on the wall I have available, which happens to match the number of basses I have! I will have to use two rows, 2 feet apart with the hangers spaced at 20-21" intervals.
