Barking Spiders Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 Essentially not Flea, who do you reckon to be the 'coolest' bassists. By cool I mean those who exude presence onstage with minimal effort and can play demanding basslines without breaking sweat. Kinda like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQk0av8L0oY Quote
MrCrane Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 I think you picked the number one already. Quote
lowhand_mike Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 That would be Les Claypool then http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7jnhTDg4mk Quote
interpol52 Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 (edited) For me its Joe Dart. Edited January 27, 2017 by interpol52 Quote
bubinga5 Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 (edited) Pino Palladino easily imo. Could probably outplay most without breaking a sweat. Edited January 27, 2017 by bubinga5 Quote
ROConnell Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 Have to say I really enjoy Nathan East (Clapton, Phil Collins). He's just cool as, effortless playing and he plays some nice lines too! Quote
Leonard Smalls Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 As the official S.I. unit of cool is the Bootsy, where 1 Bootsy is the maximum achievable value,it's obvious who the coolest everything is! Quote
stuckinthepod Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 Andy Fraser, he didn't even have to play to look cool. Effortless. See here, perhaps the greatest ever "cool" performance by a rock band imho Free - All Right Now - Isle of Wight Festival '70 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpLv4M4paSI Quote
xgsjx Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 There's loads, but by far the coolest is Les Claypool. What tops it off is that he can play the amazing bassline & sing at the same time whilst making it look a doddle! Quote
Lozz196 Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 Not sure about the demanding bass-lines bit, but Duff McKagan has to be the coolest looking bassist there is. Quote
Rich Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017
Not sure about the demanding bass-lines bit, but Duff McKagan has to be the coolest looking bassist there is.
Sorry Duff, but Phil Lynott has the Coolest Looking Bassist award in perpetuity. Quote
bartelby Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 Again, not demanding bass lines but Mark McCarthy in The Wonder Stuff is one of the coolest mofos around. Quote
Rexel Matador Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017
Not sure about the demanding bass-lines bit, but Duff McKagan has to be the coolest looking bassist there is.
You beat me to it! I find it's quite hard to not look cool holding a bass. In terms of effortless chops I would go for Matt Freeman. Steve Harris looks cool by virtue of not caring about looking cool. Anyone here heard of Propagandhi? Their bass player, Todd Kowalski, is one of the most energetic performers you will ever see and he plays like a beast too. Quote
martthebass Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 For me it was Mick Karn, just really looked (and sounded) the part... Quote
Cuzzie Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 dUg Pinnick Thread can be closed now..... Quote

crez5150 Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 Francis Hylton is a pretty kool looking dude on stage Quote
casapete Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 +1 for Nathan East. makes it look so easy, doesn't overplay and everything right for the song. This also applies to these guys for me - Dale Davis (Amy Winehouse etc) Alan Gorrie (AWB) Stuart Zender (Marc Ronson etc) Dave Bronze Tom T-Bone Wolk (Hall and Oates) Garry Tallent (E-Street band) Quote
leroydiamond Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017
Sorry Duff, but Phil Lynott has the Coolest Looking Bassist award in perpetuity.
End of. Quote
Funky Ghost Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 Geddy. His playing is on point. He always appears to be having a good time on stage. He seems like a proper "dude" who wouldn't flip out or brush you off if you met him on the street. Quote
Ghost_Bass Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 All the aforementioned are great players and performers (just a mention to Richard Bona and Tony Levin that weren't refered) but the Coolest Bass Player Ever can only be Bootsy, he is the face of coolness with chops to go with it. Quote
