spectoremg
There's a couple of threads running at the mo where power amps have been suggested as an option. Anyone using one?
Dood
I've used Power Amps in my bass rigs for years and years! I love the idea of having a modular rig in much the same way as people do HiFi separates! Ok for sure, these days I like to travel light and technology is such that I've been able to get about with a few pedals etc but once upon a time a 10U rack was almost mandatory for everything I'd gig with ha ha!!! I've had many amps from Yamaha, Peavey, QSC and Powersoft (Arguably one of the Daddies!!) There's loads to choose from out there depending on your needs. markstuk
I've had a few pre/power amp setups, always gone back to a single unit head in the end.. I'm taking my Thunderfunk 750 out for it's first outing tonight, so I'm super looking forward to that :-)
Painy
I gigged with a Line6 Bass Pod xt-Pro into a QSC 1450c power amp for a few years. Went back to heads eventually because I was never 100% happy with the sound but that was more down to the Pod. If I still had the amp I think I'd have fun running different pre-amp pedals straight into it to get different sounds.
Roland Rock
I tried a few different combinations but the best by far was an Avalon U5 into a Crest CA9 power amp. Not hugely flexible, bulky and heavy, but fantastic and deep and clean and loud and awsome. Edited January 28, 2017 by Roland Rock
spectoremg
Probably should have explained the thread better. It occurred to me that by the time my tone gets to the business end I've used the controls on my bass, an mxr at my feet and the controls on my amp. It all seems daft. [/quote] Yup, it occurred to me that I spent more time using the EQ to get the cabinet in the room to sound nice. If only someone had taken care of that so less EQ'ing was required for the actual bass sound.... hmmmmm, now let me see...

chevy-stu
I used to use a Peavey pro Bass1000, using the crossover split into a Rauch 400w power amp into a custom cab with 1x18" and 1x12". Upgraded to Yamaha PB1 pre amp, kept the Rauch amp for highs and used a 900 HH power amp for lows, added a second identical cab with 18" and 12", so still kept the crossover set up with 4 separate amp channels each into it's own speaker. Also added an old analogue Ibanez harmoniser/delay into the rack too... it was a monster but never seemed that loud.

JPJ
I briefly had the SWR Marcus Miller pre into a QSC power amp, the idea being this would be a lightweight alternative to the SM1500. In reality, it was marginally lighter, but the voicing of the MM preamp didn't really suit me, so it was added to the list of amps I've owned. Jazzjames
I use a warwick hellborg power amp because I wanted a no compromise rig that would communicate my tone with authority and clarity. Job done. It weighs a lot though!
bigjimmyc
Having just sold my Ashdown and Ampeg heads, I am surprised and delighted with the sound from my SansAmp DI into an old Audiohead AH1400 power amp with my Barefaced four10. Bags of clean deep power and classic growl on tap. Frankly I am amazed.

BabyHands
would this sort of setup work with b7k straight into any power amp such as this one is just found on gumtree ( https://www.gumtree.com/p/speakers/prosound-2-channel-200w-power-amplifier/1213283507) and then drive a standard bass cab (wattage and ohms considered) or a monitor wedge/pa speakers ? dmccombe7
Used a Roland Pre-amp split into 2off Matamp all tube power amps with Hi end into a 2x10 custom cab and Lo end into a 1x15" custom cab With my Fender Jazz it was probably the nicest tone i've ever had but heavy rig to be carting about when you only weighed 9.5stone Got rid of the full rig when one of the power amps caught fire one night while playing and roadie got a belt from it when he went to switch it off. krispn
Yup I use this bad boy live. I have a back up lightweight head but since getting this I've not used it. It isn't as complicated as some think it looks. Find the frequency you want to boost or cut, adjust the 'Q' or bandwidth of that frequency; narrow for cutting or wider for boosting and adjust bass and treble to taste. Easy as that! At a recent gig I was getting a weird resonance every time I hit an F note. Quickly dialed out the troublesome frequency before the next song and problem sorted. I previously had an Eden power amp and tried a couple of pre-amps the Read Purity being one of the best. In my rehearsal room I had that bi-amped and run a 410 (for the lows) and 115( for the high) and it was massive sounding Lightweight gear is great but I do really enjoy gigging with this rig. The sound is worth the weight. dissa - I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Fender pre-amp.
