interpol52 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 (edited) How do you open your gigs? Simmer to a boil or a straight up crowd pleaser? I'm aware that we all play in a wide variety of bands but it might be good to hear how people choose their first song. My new band is actually my old band that has reformed and we have decided to do an entirely new set. We will open with What's So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding by Elvis Costello/Charlie Adam. Edited January 29, 2017 by interpol52 Quote
Hobbayne Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 We used to open with Lenny Kravitz Are You Gonna Go My Way, but have recently started the set with Pretty Vacant. Quote
upside downer Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Currently Oasis' Rock and Roll Star but previously it's been The Who's Substitute or Dick Dale's Misirlou. Quote
gazhowe Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Currently 'The boys are back in town' by Thin Lizzy. Quote
JapanAxe Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 For the 2 completely different bands I'm in: Take It Easy Won't Get Fooled Again For the last 2 dep jobs I did: Rock Around The Clock Black Cat Bone Quote
tonyf Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 "We are family" by Chic. Stabs on the main chords for the vocalists to engage the audience for a few bars. Works great, especially when we all pile into the main song. Quote
ezbass Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Owner of a Lonely Heart normally, if not, probably a Pretenders' number. Quote
Lozz196 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 As an originals band we start with the first song off of our first album (The Hunted, off of Same sh*t Different City) . It`s a real hard-hitter and lets people know exactly what they`re going to get from us. A bit like that special forces programme I`ve just been watching, hit em hard straightaway and don`t relent at any point at all. Quote
Vinny Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 f***ing Summer of f***ing sixty f***ing nine. Quote
Mudpup Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 (edited) She Sells Sanctuary usually - nice and easy but sets the tempo for the night and settles us in. And i go for a wander out front to check levels - i can tweak the PA on open string A's if i need to.... Edited January 29, 2017 by Mudpup Quote
TrevorR Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 In the wedding band Brown Eyed Girl always seemed to do the trick and get folks up and dancing. Quote
Woodinblack Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 We actually used to start with Mustang sally, consistently for some time, but in the last 3 gigs we have changed it for Come together, 20th Century boy and Smells like teens spirit. Quote

Raymondo Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 In my last band we usually started with Don't stop ....Fleetwood Mac. Simple, bouncy and dancey if they were up for it but also sing-alongy if they weren't. Quote

Number6 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Currently a poem by Robert Calvert - Song of the Gremlin. People actually seem enthralled upon hearing a poem. Quote

dmccombe7 Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 New band Big Change by Peter Green. Old band - Burn by Deep Purple. I like the idea of a knock em dead first song. New band a bit more relaxed style of music. Dave Quote
