jonunders Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 Hi I have noted that some bass players like to play wearing gloves. Why is this? What advantages, if any, are there and if so what are they made from, would fibres catch in the strings. Jono Quote

Jono
If you are referring to Scott Devine from Scott's Bass Lessons, he wears them due to a medical condition called Focal Dystonia - the gloves stop his fingers from trembling. Cant comment any other players. Quote

toneknob Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 Also, "why the hell are you wearing those stupid gloves". Answer at 4m30s. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOVGrGBeqiI Quote
jonunders Posted February 2, 2017 Author Posted February 2, 2017 Thanks for that. I don't have any medical conditions so no need to explore further. Other than aches + pains (knees, hips) carpal tunnel syndrome, memory loss and flactulence. Quote

Dood Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 I suppose most people go straight for Scott's reason, but there are plenty more. Some bassists are allergic to Nickel and thus use gloves to act as a barrier. I've heard of some who suffer from sticky / clammy hands, for whatever reason and like to use gloves to keep things dry when playing. This is actually quite a wise idea too because if you are playing long, sweaty gigs and digging in way too hard all the time, keeping the fingers dry can go a way to helping the prevention of blisters. I've never tried using gloves so can't comment on experiences personally. Quote
skb558 Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 (edited) I sound as though I'm playing with mittens 😃 Edited February 2, 2017 by skb558 Quote
Cato Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 I'm sure I read that Scott's gloves have quite a short lifespan before they wear through and need replacing. He has to bulk order them. Quote
yorks5stringer Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 Etienne Mbap wears gloves too, not sure if there are medical reasons in his case? Quote
Cuzzie Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 I wore some gloves for a while, they were fingerless, but I was getting cramps in my hands. Did they help, maybe they did with a little compression, could have been in the early days when I started, but hands are more used to it now so I don't really wear them Quote
uk_lefty Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 I saw a bassist in a rage tribute band play in full clown outfit including white gloves. Played every line note perfect, no idea how he managed it. Quote
BassTractor Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 Yeah, Scott Devine does this. I wonder why... Quote
jpotter Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 Etienne Mbap uses them because he likes the sound that he gets using them..All for the tone. Quote
FinnDave Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 Holgar Czukay (Can's bassist) went through a phase of wearing gloves, no idea why though. Quote
Bassman Sam Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 I use boxing gloves but that's mainly to save my eyesight. Quote

eddiehoffmann Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 Anyone noticed any lack of heft when wearing gloves? Quote
Well, it all changed when they stopped using the much heavier thread. New technology gloves just don't have what the old ones do best... Quote
FinnDave Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017
For heavier thread, try welders gloves
I've got a pair of them, use them with the logburner. I'll have to try them at the next gig. Quote
