shadowalka
Fellow Basschatters I've looking out for an Alleva 5 string KBP (with maple fretboard) for a while, I'm aware I may have a wait on my hands. So I'm wondering if anyone could recommend any luthiers out there that could make a custom 5 string precision bass for me? I kinda like the way a Nash bass looks, if they came as 5 strings, I'd probably go down that route. Any advice guys?
louisthebass
Loads of custom builders out in the world - Marusczyk (sp?) & Overwater are a couple I can think of instantly who could do a 5 string P bass for you. You're probably looking at least 6 months (maybe a bit longer) for a custom build. If not, there's always Fender.... Don't have any experience of a 5 string P bass, but maybe one or two of the members on here can share their experience?
Mykesbass
I absolutely love my Shuker 5 string fretless P in my avatar. Edited February 3, 2017 by Mykesbass
bubinga5
What's your budget.?
shadowalka
Thanks for the reply guys. My budget is about £2000 and I want to keep it British. Partly because want to support british businesses, ease of communication and checking on progress.

shadowalka
Thanks Markstuk, do you have any experience with Shuker? I'm aware of his work but to be honest don't like some of his designs (particularly the headstock). However I like some of his work in the gallery. Happy Jack
Also check out work by Crinson and Bravewood. Harder to do business with than Jon Shuker, but making beautiful P-basses to order is more part of their DNA than I suspect it is for Jon. You weren't keen on my Mike Lull P5 were you? shadowalka
For some reason the Lull basses don't appeal to me....but again not a fan of their headstocks (not sure what what my issue with headstocks are) Bravewood weren't interested in a 5 string (thought it would be perfect) and I haven't approached Crimson yet. Read a few reviews where he didn't come off so well so thought again. Also the waiting time is long. Anyone have any experiences with Crimson? TheGreek
Alan at ACG builds beautiful, functional basses - he'll build you whatever you want. Check the build forum to see which members' work you like and contact them. Both Andyjr1515 and Jabba the Gut build fine instruments. You might also want to check Enfield basses on YT so that you know what the pick up system does. Edited February 4, 2017 by TheGreek
shadowalka
Thanks Greek. Andyjr1515's work is excellent, especially his singlecut, my jaw dropped. Impressive! For those who haven't seen his singlecut, here it is - http://www.ajrguitarmods.co.uk/camphor%20single%20cut%20bass.htm
Ben's videos are useful and his tools are good, but I've never ordered a guitar from him. I saw a bad review about the lead-time on the Warmouth site, but it was 6 years old. A lot can change in 6 years. I know he's taken on a few staff now and he now uses CNC too. So things may well have changed. Why not call Ben and talk to him. Human contact is amazing. I doubt he'd intentionally lead you on with a false expectation of the lead time.

I used to own this: I can't remember his name now, and I never actually dealt with him (I bought the bass from Eubassix of this parish IIRC), but he was a Scots luthier of - allegedly - cantankerous disposition. He didn't do many basses, and his specialism was very convincing relicing. Were it not for the fact that I just can't get my ahead around relicing, I'd still own that bass. Twas a wonderful player and really looked the business.
