TrevorR
Looks like Aretha is planning a nice quiet cosy retirement... Aretha Franklin: The Queen of Soul is retiring to spend time with her family http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-38920434 Can't see anyone claiming her throne as the Queen of Soul, not from the current crop of singers... silverfoxnik
Wow! Totally agree Trevor; there's no one around in her class! I think it was Jerry Wexler, one of her producers, who said of Aretha: "She's all alone in her greatness" Hope she enjoys her retirement; she's earned it! casapete
Absolutely. Great basslines too on much of her stuff from Chuck Rainey. No one to touch Aretha in my opinion.

lowdown
It don't get any better than Aretha. So many top, top tunes from her. Her phrasing was just so Rhythmical. To think she was still singing great at 72!!...Amazing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cF0tf35Mbo Slightly OT, but Al Jarreau has also just called it a day (because of ill health). Last night 'Hey Nineteen' came on and the boy was heard to remark, 'good tune'. A step in the right direction.
taunton-hobbit
I think 'quit while you're ahead' sums it up - never known (musical) life without her.........
bubinga5
Les not forget she was playing piano in a lot of this recording. Just an awesome musical woman. And just like Prince she had a huge vocal range. casapete
I remember seeing an interview with Jerry Wexler about recording Aretha. Said he couldn't get her vocal only performance nailed until he realised she needed to be playing piano at the same time for the magic to truly happen.
