What bass do you regret selling? Was it love?

I’ve bought and sold about twenty basses in my 30 years of playing; the only one I regret selling (and not being in a position to buy back when it was offered to me) was this one: an early 2000s Musicman Sterling which I imported from the USA in 2007 and sold in 2018 when I needed money to move house.

If anyone knows of its current whereabouts, please let me know.

I managed to pick up a 2nd hand Sei Flamboyant 5 string which I had to sell when moving houses (needs must). It’s the only bass I’ve owned that I wish I still had, it was a beautiful instrument.

When I ordered my Sei bass many moons ago they were just about to send out a 5 string original single cut that was reviewed in bass guitar magazine. Last year it became available at Bass Bros - I wish I’d been able to purchase that, it was a stunning instrument both to look at and to play.

In a way I regret selling every single musical instrument I have ever owned.

However there is also no point in owning an instrument that doesn't get played because technology has made it redundant (most of my synths), it has become uneconomical to repair (the rest of my synths) or because I have other instruments that are more suitable for my needs (all my fretless basses and those with less than 5 strings).

I may have posted this before but we were in New York in September 1996 celebrating our wedding anniversary, and I was allowed to buy a new Stingray from Manny’s that was manufactured September 10th 1996. Eventually brought it back to Blighty, used it for about 4 years and sold it on eBay to a lady in Scotland who bought it for her boyfriend. Been looking for it ever since. . Serial No. B03721.

Most stupid thing I ever did was selling my Jerry Jones Neptune Longhorn Bass, which is kind of a boutique, high end, version of the Danelectro one, and not in production anymore, as the guy who made them retired, and rare to find used (if I even had that kind of money as I did then), such an amazing bass, greatest bass I ever had in my hands, sounded and felt awesome.

That, and being stupid enough to sell my Ampeg B-15S (the 60W 1968 version), are my biggest regrets.

I do however also really regret selling the 28 5/8" 4 string bass I had made out of Warmoth baritone parts, with an awesome sounding humbucker Seymour Duncan Rickenbacker Bass Neck pickup in neck position, and a humbucker Seymour Duncan Strat guitar Hot Rails pickup in the bridge position.

Unfortunately I don't even got any pictures of my Jerry Jones bass and the Ampeg B-15, but I do have picture of the sub-short scale Warmoth bass (I designed the headstock myself, and might admittedly have gone a bit too far  )

"Regret" may not be the right word, coz circumstances, but ...

Twentieth of June, 1995 Ray 5-H fretless.
That thing, and I've said it before, started singing as soon as you opened its case. Now I'm no bass player, but I'm still a music man and can tell that that was a special instrument.

All other sales can't compare, though the 2014 PDN Neptune Blue Ray 4-H comes close due to its stunning looks.

Funnily, even though I've loved my Bongos, I actually miss my 2008-2012 Classic Vibes (both Ps and Js) more.

My first pre-cbs was a 1956 Fender P-bass. It was a great bass and I regret selling it. I do currently have a 1954 P-bass that is my number one. So I’m not crying myself to sleep every night.

In 1992, I saved up all my gigging money to buy a Fender HMT precision semi hollow bass, in black with cream binding.  Neck was slim like a jazz played beautifully.  Hated the pointy headstock and I had never experienced a piezo bridge so struggled to get a good sound out of it.  Traded for a Bass Collection 5 string, which i loved, but to this day I regret letting that bass go.

Heres a pic of one (which looks exactly the same) that was sold on here a few years ago....If you have one and would like to sell give me a shout, we might be able to work something out.

I’ve banged on about this so many times that I’m sure people are sick of hearing it…

It was my Westone Raider I in silver/grey. I loved that thing! It was only an incredibly dire situation that caused me to have to sell it.

There’s a chap on BassChat that, I think I remember him saying, owns one that lives on top of a wardrobe. I have spent the last couple of years trying to decide if it would be rude to ask him if he’d sell it to me…

Two late '90s Warwick Thumbs, a fretted and a UF. But more so, this Greco PMB. I didn't need to sell it, but something came up and it went, even though I could have worn the cost of the newbie.

An early Ernie Ball 2 band Stingray ("StingrayBass" decal, headstock trussrod bolt, 4 bolt neck...) , trans red, rosewood board, finish worn through on the forearm contour with lots of dings and chips around the bottom, modded it at The Bass Centre in Wapping and had a Basslines Hot Jazz neck pickup installed along with the input moved to the underside of the body. Pots were vol/vol/treble/bass.

It had a nice bit of flame to the neck too.

It was the bass I cut my gigging teeth on around London during the 90s, sold it to cover rent in 2002.

I don't have any pics of it unfortunately but there is a great live video knocking around in someone's attic but we're long out of touch.

Hit me up if you own it or know of it's whereabouts. I sold it to a couple of guys who were opening a new studio at the time. That's all I can remember.

Also it was pretty bloody heavy!

Great bass though.

After my divorce 40yrs ago, I had to sell my '76 Thunderbird to pay for rent/security deposit on a dismal bedsit. 😐

A mate of mine had his house taken off him by his Ex. He'd put the house in her name as he mistakenly thought the taxman was coming after him. Things got bad with them and whilst he was working abroad, she sold the house on the fly and moved away. He came home, tried his key in the lock; didn't work. Rang the doorbell, and a stranger answered. Cue 'WTF are YOU??' That's how he found out he was homeless.

Additional info: This was his house, that he alone had purchased.

A few I’d like to have back if I could, but no massive regrets. Fortunately I’ve sold only the basses/guitars that I don’t strictly need - cool things which were ultimately not very versatile or weren’t getting used for whatever reason.

If I had more money I’d have kept my Epi Jack Casady, my MIJ Mustang bass, a cream Sandberg TT4 that I’ve seen back in Basschat since, along with guitars including a peachy SG Junior and an Epi Casino, plus some old bombproof Peavey amps I had.

But yeah I can live without them.

Sold my Fender MIJ 75 Jazz reissue, natural finish with a rosewood fingerboard back to Crane’s in Cardiff around 2001 as part ex on a guitar when I got heavily into Neil Young.

It’s by far my biggest regret, the bass was a gift from my parents and I think about it quite often. I really wish I could get it back, I last heard it was bought by the bassist from the Welsh language band Big Leaves who I think later became Sybriddion but don’t know for sure.

I still feel such a fool about it 😔

Send them a message on Facebook or Instagram and pick up the trail!

I'd do the same to find my old bass if I knew where to start...

I’ve tried. I sent emails to Big Leaves but never had a response. The bass player was called Kevin Tame I think but he left when the band broke up and the trail went cold.

Well to resurrect an old thread, I did regret selling that modulus but kept a watch out from when I realised - back in 2017 - until 2 weeks ago when I spotted my very own bass up for sale in Some Neck guitars in Dublin.
Guess what? We’re reunited and it feels so good…..

I had a play of this a couple of years ago when I was selling a Stingray to the previous owner. It's a lovely, lovely bass. Don't sell it again 😉

Ok, I'll play..

I have two with both dating back to 2006:

1: A mid nineties 6-string Status - I think it was an Energy Artiste with a wooden neck but it had the two-band EQ and was the 'other' body shape so not 100% on what it actually was. I do know it played like butter and was a beautiful instrument but I sold it to buy a 600 Suzuki.

2: One of the early Fender Jazz Deluxes. It was in a beautifully vibrant semi-transluscent blue colour and being a '96, had the 50th anniversary thing on the back of headstock. After an incident with aforementioned 600 Suzuki and a broken wrist, I had to sell it to pay my council tax and pay for repairs to the bike. 😬 I replaced it with a Japanese Marcus Miller signature at about half of the value of the deluxe. I never got on with it, sadly so sold it a few months later.

These days things tend to stay so I've become something of a hoarder..

There is no chance that it’s going anywhere.
I used to have a strict one in, one out policy but I’m over that now and deploy a strict 5 in, hide two, sell one policy!

Is that headstock inspired by the Dan Hartmann bass guitar jumpsuit.
