Ah look back in 83 (is what it says & is probably about right

Refinished silverburst Marathon with an 8 string neck - it was my first proper bass & originally 4 string & black - and black Marathon fretless.

Guess which is the only bass I still own :D and if it was 83 I had only just bought it

We all had them in another band

Dave, any opportunity to discuss Mike Rutherford, Shergold's and Genesis is internet porn! :P
I do recall pics of him with a unfamiliar bass around that time.

Think there's a few guys on here that might be into Genesis in a big way. Think maybe you and Toneknob fit that bill.
I'm just a fan of a certain period around Seconds Out to Duke era.
Claim to fame Mr Collins bought me lunch one day. :D

Shergold Atrocity - We Name The Guilty Men

J'Accuse:

Messrs Barnes & Mullins (Musical Instrument Distributors) who bought the Shergold name in 2015 and who commissioned this pig's ear.

Mr Patrick Eggle - the designer of the 'guitar' (also designer of Faith Acoustic Guitars, another B&M own brand)

Mr Brian Cleary (B&M joint CEO) green-lit this appalling act of lèse majesté and signed off on an un-loadable web site full of hipsters with pigs.

~

And for those who cannot be bothered to wait for the Shergold site to load, here are some images in all their sordid ghastliness.

Eggle-ish headstock, Fret-King style pickguard, Seymour pups, Tele Bridge (WTF?), Gibbo-ish reflector knobs

Ugh.

Marginally better HB and P90 combo, still a bit crap.

There's a guy in the second black and white picture sitting on the edge of the stage with a Wasp synthesiser. Sod the Shergolds bring back the EDP Wasp!

I had a lunch with Steve Hackett once! It's one o'clock, etc. I was a huge fan, not so much now - just a massive anorak. Much prefer Steve Hackett's and Peter Gabriel's respective solo material these days.

I've still got mine - the quality control was notoriously inconsistent. Thankfully however you did get stable ones although mine has a casing held together by superglue and prayer it has never let me down and works perfectly. 😊

My Marathon bass is sat in a corner banging its headstock against the wall.
As are mine....
If they'd keep the original headstock shape I could've lived with it...
Shergold= distinctive headstock...
The new guitar headstock shape looks as though they gave up half way through designing it...
And the website.....utter sh*te!!!

It's a pity that Patrick Eggle is damaging his reputation by being associated with this.

I'm lucky enough to own an Eggle-era FretKing Esprit guitar, which is a very fine instrument indeed.

Anyone played one yet? No, you say? I thought not, but let's just write them off based on the pictures, eh?
I used to own a fretless Marathon 6, and I liked it well enough, but I always wished the body design was more elegant, and comfortable, and find the distinctive headstock just clunky. I really wanted to love them more, but imo they never came up with a great looking design.
The double necks did look impressive though. I roadied for a friend's band (called Media) that had 2 6/4 double necks, back in the 70s (and bass pedals too!) Eye-catching, but a bit out of step with the zeitgeist of 1977...
Yeah but Wal have cornered the market in enormous 2+2 headstocks.

I see Shaftesbury is back as well! A lot of their models look suspiciously like Stagg instruments, but with the pickups upgraded to full-fat US Seymour Duncans. Seems an odd decision to basically up-spec one corner of an otherwise budget instrument. The Shaftesbury link is a bit lost on me, either way.
Arguably those could be considered truer to the old Shaftesbury line than the new Shergold guitars are to the old ones. AFAIK Shaftesbury was a name used by Rose Morris for fairly generic but decent quality copies they sold, which is more or less what's going on now.
