Bands you adore that no one else has ever heard of...

I was sorting out some MP3s for the car and so browsing through my iTunes folder. Looking at the bands I love there were a few which are well known choices... Lizzy, Rush, ELO, Incognito, James Taylor... However it struck my that a very high proportion of my fave bands are ones to which even most music fans might go, "Huh? Who?". Now it's not that my tastes are exclusively limited to the Guatemalan nose flute or something. These are all pretty much bands which have had hit UK albums and singles over the last forty years or so. OK they may be located on a more obscure corner than Kylie, Status Quo or R.E.M. But still it's a surprise so few folks seem to have heard of them.

Even here, where a more discerning level of music fanhood seems to be de rigueur ive only ever seen a few mentioned in conversation once or twice. Are there bands that you've long adored that you're surprised don't have a wider appeal or recognition factor? Would be interested to know who is on your list.

The ones that stood out for me were seminal Irish folk rock band, Horslips, short lived 90s jangle poppers, River City People, folk/prog virtuoso, Gordon Giltrap, Celtic-fusion band, Iona, and prog-metallers Threshold (tho Rich did give them a fantasy band shout out just now...). I'll add a video by each in the next post in case anyone's interested in checking them out.

When I were a lad my favourite band was "Light of the World", people only know Everything but the Girl because of "Missing" despite them having over 10 albums, hardly anybody knows The Portico Quartet or Transglobal Underground (despite our own Xilldx being involved). Anytime I play Ozric Tentacles to anybody they're amazed that they hadn't heard of them.

I feel sorry for people who think that Oasis are a good band.

Whenever I mention Lambchop people of a certain age immediately think of Shari Lewis and 'cute' glove puppet. A few people may have heard of 'Nixon' but 'Is A Woman' is beautiful.
Dawn of the Replicants, a Galashiels band produced a few really good albums; not sure if they're still doing it.
Very fond of Horslips too. Saw them in '76. Haven't heard The Tain or Aliens in ages.
Anyone remember Badger? Ex-Yes keyboard Tony Kay's band.

My current fave bands are Booze & Glory, The Last Resort and The Old Firm Casuals but I`d be pretty sure not many know much about any of them.

I've heard of The Old Firm Casuals, through the Lars link, but not heard any yet. I've been listening to a fair bit of Rancid recently so will try and give them a spin tomorrow.

I was a big fan of Horslips and still have the first LP on vinyl, the one with the concertina-shaped cover.

Never liked Iona though. Much more into Alba.

I'd like to nominate Any Trouble - perfectly crafted and performed pop for now people, disappeared without trace possibly due to Clive Gregson looking like your least favourite geography teacher. What a pity.

Hopefully you`ll like them Graham, I think they`re awesome. We were lucky enough to be asked to support them last year, a real "we`re not worthy" moment for me. I was really impressed by their professionalism too.

I was a big fan of The Truth in the early 80's. They rose from the ashes of Nine Below Zero after their split.
They never really made it that big, although they did get on Top Of The Pops with this. Any one recall it?

Late '60s / early '70s UK 'art-rock' band Audience. I've got two of their albums - House On The Hill and Lunch - that I still love playing. They really were quite unique. Enjoy - hope the links work!

I never heard the song but I remember seeing The Truth's Dennis Greaves sashaying round the corridors at Alaska Rehearsals wearing a voluminous pair of yellow and white striped parachute trousers, presumably as part of his 'image change' from the besuited NBZ look.

Me and our drummer The Toad looked at Dennis and burst into peals of laughter. Dennis scampered off into the office to hide. Great times.

Oh, yes, bands adore no one heard of:

I had a poster of their album cover on my wall at university. Had never heard the album, just liked the Roger Dean artwork.
