scrumpymike
Guys, been away from this thread for a while so apologies if anyone else posted this link - another one from my 'obscure band' choice, Audience. Cool bass!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5sOM2epm9s
Thunderpaws
Stereo Embers. They are a Seattle band I have been giving some listening to recently. They are on Mike Mcreadie's label. https://youtu.be/0GK0LM3QJaU Ta
ezbass
I've recently been reminded of what a great guitar player Steve Morse is, one of those guys who you can recognise within a few notes. I remember this band, featuring Mr Morse and others, being formed but didn't really pay them much mind at the time. But now I'm hooked. The tracks Kayla and The Storm (starting around 11:40) are wonderful to my ears. The band also feature Dave LaRue on bass, who is no slouch on our favoured instrument. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2weoDis2_0&t=5s
Dapper Bandit
Good to see love for Boards of Canada, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Secret Chiefs 3, Slint and Bark Psychosis! My top picks would have to be: Shellac; Steve Albini's current band. Noisy, melodic, complex, punk. Well worth a million listens. Ui: Funky post rock that owes as much to ESG and Liquid Liquid as it does to any rock group. Tortoise: are they classed as obscure? Definitely classed as unmissable. Estradasphere: a million miles a minute genres hopping madness. Self-evident: Math rock but with tunes and vocals. Faraquet: Like Self-evident but they came first. SisterAbdullahX
Burning Water and Raging Honkies, great songs, great playing, but mainly because I'm a Michael Landau BORE!! Oh, and Jellyfish, cos they should've been massive. Edited April 1, 2017 by SisterAbdullahX
Cow
I almost always get a funny look when I tell people Ned's Atomic Dustbin are my favourite band (and usually get asked to repeat it more than once!) Also a big fan of Dream Disciples, but have yet to meet anyone else who's even heard of them
Steve Browning
I'm fortunate to know the drummer from SNAFU, Terry Popple. A great player and a really lovely guy. I've been fortunate to play with him a couple of times and he's always been very kind about my very average abilities! He also played with Van Morrison. As for bands, how about the Decemberists, and Cake. Both American indie bands, Decemberists a bit more folky.
I have had the pleasure of playing with Terry. We were Desparate Dan Band men together (on the first LP). As you say, a great guy and I have (almost) fond memories of his broad Middlesborough accent saying 'who cut the cheese, man' when the slide player in the band had let loose one of his 'exp[erimental bubbles'. Steve Browning
Upp - late 70's funk, here ably supporting Jeff Beck. Not surprisingly, the bass player was called Stephen Amazing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzDqqxKnW3o
Buzzy
Back in the early 80s I was a huge fan of One the Juggler. I've never met anyone who's heard of them even though they used to fill up the Marquee back in the day and supported Elvis Costello at the RAH. https://www.youtube....h?v=2tgUOfhjVP4 In a strange twist of fate in the early 2000s I found myself in a tribute band with their bass player who had switched to guitar. Eventually I played Sax with them when their album was reissued a couple of years ago. Edited April 3, 2017 by Buzzy
