Every year I go to Desertfest. Every year people ask me who I saw, and if I enjoyed it. And every year they inevitably ask "who?" :D

Love this thread!

I offer Welsh prog-rockets Quicksand (only album Home is Where I Belong reissued a few years ago by Esoteric Recordings).

Come to think of it these are all esoteric recordings!

Árstíðir -- Icelandic folksters.

Myrath -- Tunisian prog metal. Seriously.

Nice call on Myrath, Arstioir are a good shout too.

For me, even in Metal circles these guys are rather (Continuing from Rich's Folk) obscure :

And Curve - i think they sort of got shoved into the Bands With One Word As Their Name category of shoegaze but...

Great thread this and good to see some love on here for The Monochrome Set and for Andy Warren, who I used to also enjoy watching as a player when he was in the early incarnation of Adam & The Ants, circa 1977.

Pleasantly surprised also to see The God Machine mentioned, whom my ex-wife used to manage back in the early 90s. Our son Jimmy is named after their bass player, Jimmy Fernandez who sadly died of a brain hemorrhage, which brought the band's career to a stop far too soon!

These days my musical tastes have mellowed somewhat, and one band I absolutely love are The Mummers.

If you like Bacharach, Carole King, Scott Walker, Todd Rundgren etc, then you should like this band.

Sorry; not sure how to properly embed YouTube videos on the site, especially when using my mobile.

Some great stuff here...

Lovely to see some love for Bark Psychosis ( I saw them in Brum a lifetime ago and they blew my doors off), Miracle Legion and a stack of others. I'm currently very much enjoying The Mummers' tune...

From the dusty crevices of the Rushbo archive, I give you:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EE-znePV0UQ
The Grays - Very Best Years. A PowerPop supergroup. Peerless.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJ2Cdw8THX8
Game Theory - Erica's Word. Scott Miller is one of the most under-rated songwriters of the last 50 years.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7hkO8v9aiI
Captain Wilberforce - Good Times, You Said. Something current! The "band" is essentially Simon Bristoll - A Brummie now based in Leeds. He's been steadily cranking out Pop-Rock masterpieces for over 10 years and there's a new album due very soon.

I love Ladytron!

Destroy Everything You Touch and International Dateline are on one of my favourite playlists that I listen to most days.

Some bands that don't appear to be very well known or popular in UK

Canadian band SAGA have been following since late 70's and still playing world tours.
http://youtu.be/sdyY...NHSjMrodw8-Q3UA

Starcastle another band from late 70's and altho bassist passed away few yrs back they have continued to play together. Bassist was main songwriter and original member.

Arjen Luccasen is maybe better known from his other band Ayreon but this was a solo album combining own compositions with cover versions. Also has Rutger Hauer doing the talking parts

I remember really liking that song and it's pie based parody back in the day!

Heard of the Cardiacs as a friend is obsessed with them and the God Machine album cover is familiar but I've not heard of much else in this thread. I adored the first 2 Dredg albums back in the early 00's but I don't think anyone I mentioned them to had heard of them. There's already a lot on this thread to get your teeth into but this is one of their best if you've got the time to give it a try.

On the subject of ace Canadian bands - Max Webster. Basschatters of a certain age may have caught them touring with Rush on the "Tour of the Hemispheres". They were incredible. A sort of Pop/Rock/Prog/Zappa amalgam. And they even managed to sneak on to TOTP...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUhc8-vUp8o

Their latter-day Bassist, Dave Myles was a brilliant player - fantastic plectrum-Precision sound. Kim Mitchell still plays in Canada and has survived a recent heart attack. A unique guitarist and writer.

Bivouac were amazing live but disappeared without a trace.

Singer/guitarist Paul is mate of mine. They had reunion tour last year but then went their separate ways again.

Difficult to beat Hanoi Rocks, Tim, good call. Mike Monroes current material is also really good.
Weirdly, I'd never heard of Hanoi Rocks until I lived in Finland.

The thing for me is a lot of our friends have no massive interest in anything that's not in / been in the charts. Also, growing older, you mention Gary Numan to a lot of folk under 30 and they've no idea, you have to mention tracks that feature his samples.

So, to that end I'm not posting massively obscure to those of us in here but stuff that draws a blank with the muggles tends to be stuff like...
Logic System (Hideki Matsutake of Yellow Magic Orchestra)
John Foxx (I get blank looks so have to sing "Aaahh Viennaaah" and then proceed to explain there was a vocalist before Midge Ure)
Our Daughter's Wedding (remember Lawnchairs?)
LFO (the Leeds outfit)

Saw them with Rush late 70's Farewell to Kings tour i think. They certainly impressed me as a support band and subsequently bought the album.

[... my original love was the 80s sleaze scene.] (Sorry, proper quoting thingy not working)

I lived in Nottingham in the late 80s. There was a semi-legendary local band called "Sleeze Patrol" on the go at the time, with a singer named Punky Wayne. The band were fairly atrocious, a triumph of image over substance. Wayne was often to be seen strutting and sleazing around town with his paunch leaking out of a rising sun T shirt, back-combed jet black hair and eyeliner inexpertly applied, affecting a reasonable impression of excess Jack Daniels intake. A proper character, and utterly hopeless musician. :)

Subcircus. We supported them in the 90's and I was speechless watching their set. Their album Carousel is one of my all time favourites.
I came to this thread wondering if I'd recognise any of the band names in here - very glad to see Subcircus!

I saw them live when I was at university. I often wonder what the band are doing now, they apparently all just disappeared without a trace.

The Grays (very sadly only) album gets played to death on a regular basis in my house! Utterly brilliant from start to finish. Pretty much anything that came out from the folks involved in Jellyfish is: A. well worth tracking down, and B. generally pretty obscure... One really great off-shoot from the Jellyfish inspired PowerPop movement was Randy & the Bloody Lovelies. Basically a vehicle for Randy Wooten, and only two albums, but good stuff.

As for bands, how about the Decemberists, and Cake. Both American indie bands, Decemberists a bit more folky.
Nice to see a mention for Cake! going back a few years, I toured in support of Chuck Prophet, and he had ex-Cake drummist Todd Roper in the band. Really lovely bloke and a great player.

Auto Pilot, their album House Of Sleep is incredible, a real journey:
