therealting
Was wondering whether anyone's tried using speakers like these in their bass rig: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PAIR-New-300-Watt-15...1QQcmdZViewItem They're inexpensive, compact and pretty lightweight... I know I'd have to remove the passive low-pass-filter, but otherwise, is there anything to stop me getting a pair of 15" bass bins to use as bass speakers for pub gigs where I don't want to worry too much about beer being spilt over my equipment? bass_ferret
Why not get a couple of 1x15 bass cabs if thats what you want. Have you seen the sensitivity of those ones on e-bay.

therealting
Is the poor sensitivity a question of a bad speaker driver, or poor cabinet design? If it's mostly a bad speaker, I certainly wouldn't mind swapping out the speaker... I was more wondering about the general idea of the thing. Some of the bass bins come with mid-range Eminence drivers which are probably better?
Steve_K
Those speakers are shocking, people have brought them to gigs before and I've just had them as a seat at the mixer

therealting
Ok, I'll repeat... I know they have bad frequency response, but that's mainly because of the low-pass filter. I'm mainly wondering what they are like as cabs. For 50 quid a cab, I don't mind paying to put new speakers in.

You need a true horn loaded design for that. Take a look at this web site. There is plenty to mull over on this site, and you should be able to build an Omni 10 for roughly the same amount as the eBay cabinet pair. One Omni 10 will go louder than both these cabs, as Bill's speakers are very good at converting Watts into sound level. Bill knows what he is doing, and has designed a range of speakers that surpass most big name commercial designs in efficiency and performance. Tinman
I used PA cabs (12" and 15") when I first started playing bass, awful! No definition, just a completely muddy mush. Didn't matter what I did with the EQ, I just couldn't get a good sound from them. IMO don't bother.
Dr.Dave
Just to be a sort of fly in the ointment... We did a festival type gig a bit back ago and forgot to load my 1x15 , leaving just my mini 48. What was in the trailer were 2 turbo sound bass bins from our PA which weren't needed that day so I hooked up one of those. Got a phenomenal sound!! It was a one off though. Horses for courses generally and sure you could find a scruffy old bass guitar cab that the great unwashed can spill their pints on.
RichBowman
We bought a Skytec monitor once - it was shoddy as hell, and that was in the relatively undemanding role as a vocal monitor. Was (and still is) simply awful. I'd steer well clear of that particular brand. Rich
bass_ferret
I think there is a world of difference between Turbosound gear and this stuff.

I suspect the entire reason for the poster's question is that he's seeking an inexpensive alternative to traditional bass cabs. The short answer: you get what you pay for. therealting
Again, thanks for all your input. I'll definitely not get these cabs! Sure, the low cost appeals to me, but I'm also attracted by their compact size and light weight. What about something like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AudioPro-Proel-500-w...oQQcmdZViewItem Or should I generally avoid bass bins in favour of bass cabs? bass_ferret
Cabs designed for bass guitar (or eub) are designed for bass guitar. Cabs designed for PA (particularly low end of the market not designed to take a fully mike'd or DI'd band) are not designed for bass guitar. The Ox used cabs using PA design principles like folded horn bass bins, acitve crossovers etc but they were a lot more than £300 a pair. therealting
You'll all be relieved to hear that I bought an EBS Neo 2x12" cab this evening. Can't wait to hear it at full tilt in rehearsal tomorrow!
