Which one was the hardest song you have learned and why?

Same here. It saw it voted best bassline ever, bought it, realised it was beyond my ability! Fast forward a year or two and the band suggest adding it to our set. Cue six weeks of slowly gathering pace and fx pedals!

Playing this bassline is a bit of a holy grail for me too. I can play it, just not with the speed, precision and consistency that Chris Wolstenholme does...

Blind Man by Black Stone Cherry was one I found difficult, for two reasons. Firstly it`s really not my style of playing, secondly I have a real problem with songs in that "tuned-down-to-wherever" thing, as I simply can`t pick out what`s going on.

Psychotic Precison by Cannibal Corpse and The Grudge by Tool are two I've been working on for a little while; haven't nailed either yet, but getting there.

Alex Webster is a stunning player and makes those Cannibal Corpse songs look far too easy.

Many many years ago I had to learn several songs in a short time notice such as Queens, Rainbow, Alice Cooper, Extreme, Bon Jovi and some others. The rehearsals went well and when we had our first booking the singer left. That was the last time I gigged in 1998.

Now I found the very end part of Two Minutes to Midnight by IM challenging.

...Don't even mention Paul Turner's flawless version with Shuffler, which is noticeably faster than the original.

Rhythm stick cover;

Sorry to go against your wishes by mentioning but I have to say - for the pointer towards Shuffler -

- thanks.

Strangely enough, the song I found the hardest was one I could have played the easiest just for the sake of a bar gig, however, I wanted to try and nail the actual bass playing on the recording.

Son of a preacher man (Dusty's version)
She recorded this in Memphis and I believe the bassist was Tommy Cogbill.

The recording doesn't offer a good enough mix for me to really pinpoint what he's doing and normally, I would've said that he'd played about 5,000 notes too many but it seriously works on the recording.

Not even sure if I've nailed it 6 years down the line

I have the same problem with SOPM. Having worked it out it just didn't seem to work with the band and then I realised it is due to having a very busy Drummer and Guitarist in the band and there really was too much going on. Had a listen to the Joss Stone version which is much simpler and works better with the "busy bees"..

Overture 1928 by Dream Theatre. I learnt it fot my friends prog metal side project. There were more notes to learn in that one song than about ten of the regular verse-chorus-verse type songs in my pop covers band. I never really nailed some of the insanely fast runs that myung does. Anyway, certainly made me appreciate the technicality of the peops who play this genre of music. I also find that I have trouble really committing to really learning a song well unless I know that it's going to be gigged.

Me too.

Edit: I just listened back and realised that this is a dubbed version for whatever reason, probably international copyright. The officially released film - Amadeus - was quite good however so I can recommend it as something to watch and chill with.

Dead Goon by Mr Bungle. That main line in the verses has been my nemesis bassline for nearly 25 years now. I can do it, but as soon as I step away from it for a while then it's gone.

It was done on a fretless too, that would take me another 25 years to master.

At the moment it's Rhythm Stick. Not so much difficulty learning it as executing it faithfully.

I sweated blood learning this to play at a wedding.

The first thing to watch is that most transcriptions of it are wrong. The version that was in Bassist magazine, for example, has so many errors it's almost worse than having nothing. It's a lot easier if your hands are in the right place...
Keep your right hand over the bridge pickup and use rest strokes, anchoring your thumb on the E string just neckside of the pickup.
I could provide a correct transcription (i.e. as NWR plays it) if you're interested... although it might be exactly what you're already playing.

The MarloweDK cover on YouTube sounds right to me. I used that to help me nail it.

Yes please! Er, can I have it in tab too? Not essential but helpful.

Interestingly that is blocked on the basis of my country for copyright reasons by SME.

Who tf is/are SME?
I have this trouble with Monkey Man, can play the fast bass run on my own and with a drum machine but with the band I always struggle, mind you I've watched 3 bassists with other bands playing it and they all cheated.
I'm currently trying to learn Rancids Time Bomb, it's a very fast walking bass line, I can manage it on 15% slower at the moment, hopefully muscle memory will kick in soon

Yep, I'll tab it out in powertab and post it later... it's in my head at the moment.

The job's a good 'un. Clip successfully [s]captured[/s] viewed (your honour). Many thanks for offering to do the tab too.

I wouldn't worry about messing up HMWYRS, even 'Norman' has a fight with it sometimes... :D
I suppose the thing with it is, relax when your playing it and don't force it.

Whoops, at around 00:48
Haha!

Yes, work it up with a metronome, section by section, only increasing the speed when you can play it relaxed at the slower speed.

I copied the track to audacity, slowed it right down and transcribed it beat by beat, then took each phrase individually, looping them at reduced speed until I could play them smoothly.

That's the intro, 1st verse and chorus... the rest repeats this general groove.

Cheers chap!

I'll have a quick run through for comparison later. It's about time I had another go, especially given the help that's been offered freely here. It would be rude not to in fact. Heeheehee
