Fender Jazz Neck - around 1974 - heavily modified
£300

A bit of an odd one this. Many years ago I bought a Jazz Bass from a local music shop. It was a bit of a shed of a bass. The body had been badly routed for EMG soapbars and the neck had been badly refretted - but at the price I thought it was worth a punt. After a bit of research, I dated it (as best I could) to around 1974, mainly by what was left of the bass, and the stamp on the neck heel - which was a lot more legible then than it is now.

The binding on the neck was cracked and the inlays were all badly cracked as well. I took it to local Luthier Andy Viccars who renovated it for me and turned it into a nice looking and playing fretless neck. The binding was replaced, the markers were replaced with Abalone pieces and it was resined over.

Some time later, I wanted to go fretted, and Andy obliged, fitting it with jumbo frets.

The work entailed skimming the fretboard, so it's thinner than normal - I wonder if this makes it more like a Geddy neck? Bad side of this is that on the first fret, it looks like you can see the truss rod just peeping through - not sure if it's the truss rod as it doesn't move when the truss rod turns so it's prob some of the gubbins associated with it.

The truss rod works but is quite stiff getting the neck straight with heavier strings so i tended to stick to something like 40 - 100s. I can't get a really low action on it but if you can cope with around 3mm at the 12th fret on the E string then you should be able to manage that. It may be that with some fret fettling you could get the action lower.

I've tried to be as honest as possible with the description, although it's not close to original it's a stunning looking neck and may suit someone who can cope with a higher action.

As an aside, I first changed the body to a (period correct) Geddy body that I had sprayed in Nitro Olympic White, and have recently changed the neck to an Allparts Maple Job with Black blocks - so the bass is really a 'Trigger's Broom' of a bass - great player though!

Anyway - on to the pics:

Apologies for the blue tartan slippers.

Difficult to price, but gonna put it up for £300 collected from sunny Milton Keynes. No problem posting at buyer's risk/cost. No trades please.
