TI's seemed a bit, well, meh really. La Bella's were ok, but still not quite there.. Chromes just really brought out the sound of a P for me. YMMV of course
discreet
Proper tort is just so SWEET. None of the modern stuff has that deep 3D celluloid loveliness. Very nice bass, I can just imagine what it smells like. Edited March 3, 2017 by discreet

Bridgehouse
Don't worry chaps, I don't mind you hijacking my thread with tort porn - after all, my 64 does have a fine piece of genuine tort on for you to compare and contrast
Just before anyone else does answer - this one does have checking on it - you can't see it in the photos but it does. It's so fine that it's really hard to get the camera to pick it up. But it's there tho..
Bridgehouse
Cor, that was hard.. tried to get a photo with some checking, and you can just see it on this one, just above the reflection of the lamp..
largo
Cheers, reason I ask is my dad has a '73 Precision bought from new & its finish is checked to an inch of its life & the paint is also worn off big style! Yours looks like a new bass in comparison. Great looking bass by the way.

It's Olympic White - maybe it's something to do with the colour? The 64 is a one owner, and has been mollycoddled (despite the dings) so I suspect it's just had a relatively easy life..?
The pre 68 Fenders have a nitro lacquer top coat whereas the post 68 ones are poly. Nitro is prone to crack, sometimes just lightly but the poly ones often really crack when they do, which is rarer. With both, the differences between instruments is mostly dependent on the environmental conditions that it's lived and been played in. Best one I ever saw for being uniquely mashed up belonged to a guy who played in a beach band in Hawaii, the band left their equipment on the beach by the stage when they weren’t playing, including his pre CBS bass, looked amazing and wind/sand swept. Musicman20
I'm pretty certain a lot of nitro checking happens with the environment it is kept in. If you take an instrument out of a very hot house into a cold venue and do this repeatedly without letting the instrument warm up a little, chances are it will start to check. I have a few nitro instruments and now I understand nitro, I am less worried (although I would still be a little gutted if it were proper damage) if the paint reacts a little. It's almost like 'oh well, it's nitro.....it'll react at some point.'
