Here's a quick (You-Tube) demo of the new J Tone preamp from John East. Its really easy to install and use. You can get a great range of sounds from it and its got some user controls (Tone wheels) to set Bass and treble frequencies to your particular bass. Plus it comes with a couple of tone caps that can be swapped in and out for further modification.

If you're not happy with your bass tone turbo charge it with of these.
