gafbass02 Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 (edited) My mate found this in her grandads place. Looks like an old Marshall to me, but not really my area of expertise. Any ideas? taunton-hobbit Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 Yup it's a Marshall - looks like an early JTM45 - need care here, they did a re-issue. If it's original, it's worth loads of pennies............. Quote
obbm Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 With that Bulgin mains connector and a pair of KT66 bottles I would say it was an early one. You could email Marshall and ask them to check from the serial number. Quote
taunton-hobbit Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 Aah - the back pic wasn't around when I replied - it's early, no doubt..... The very first Marshall® amp, made back in 1962, was the JTM45. It was an instant hit and launched a whole new generation of groundbreaking guitar players and sounds. Since then, connoisseurs of tone have sought out rare original JTM45s from the ’60s. (from the Marshall website) Quote
markstuk Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017
Ace. Looks promising then
Yup, thousands... Quote
taunton-hobbit Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 DON'T POWER IT UP !!!!!!! Give it to a proper tech......it needs tlc.......... I'd contact Steve Rowse in Axminster, he's a Marshall approved fixer and knows what he's doing...pm me for contact........ Quote
gafbass02 Posted March 4, 2017 Author Posted March 4, 2017 Cheers. I've sent a link to this thread. Not heard back yet. Quote
scalpy Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 I thought these kind of discoveries didn't happen any more! There's hope for us all! Quote
SpondonBassed Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 Does your mate's grandad know what he's got? I'd have thought he'd be interested, seeing as it's his and all. Quote
gafbass02 Posted March 4, 2017 Author Posted March 4, 2017 (edited) Sadly he is unwell with age, but he will be involved. Edited March 4, 2017 by gafbass02 Quote

Burns-bass Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 The first thing to do is not to plug it in! These old valve amps can store up all sorts of trouble (and you need a speaker to take the load too!). It'll need to be looked over by a specialist but if it is an early JTM45 it could be worth a lot, depending on roginality and whether it works of course. The JTM45 is one of the few amps that defined rock music. Quote
gafbass02 Posted March 5, 2017 Author Posted March 5, 2017 Update: she's seen the thread and thanks you all very much for the help :-) I'll keep you posted on developments as I hear them, it was with an old vox cab too. Quote
Happy Jack Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 I now can't wait for you to check your uncle's loft .... Quote
ivansc Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 The very earliest ones didn't have all the gold - they were in aluminium chassis with white panels. Sadly many of these early ones were converted to run on EL34s which doesn't give quite the same sound.... Kim Rew of Katrina and the Waves & the Soft Boys had a couple of these years ago. I did a fair bit of on-the-road fixemup on them at the time. Quote
Painy Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 Our drummer was working on a demolition site about 4 years ago. When he was clearing out one of the basements he found an old Marshall Combo just buried under a pile of junk. The site manager was happy for him to take it away just to save a bit of space in a skip so he took it home with him. He ended up getting £2600 for it in a non working condition from a dealer/repairer so what it would have been worth working and to a collector I can only imagine. Quote
arthurhenry Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 I know of someone who owned Hendrix's first Marshall head. It was auctioned for £20,000. Quote

Spike Vincent Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 No model code and small grey feet and a cream back panel provisionally make this a 1965 model. If it's early 1965 then it's a JTM-45, if its late 1965 it MIGHT be a JTM - 100, checking involves looking inside to see if there's two 50 w transformers and a solid state rectifier. Either way, very collectable, big bucks and DON'T PLUG IT IN without getting it checked first. Quote
taunton-hobbit Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 Front panel is 'JTM 45' - you have to zoom the pics. Quote
