But hiphop never attracted me much, despite playing in a band with a strong hip hop component years ago for maybe 9 months I just have heard a lot of stuff I did not like, and little that I did like. But a semi random conversation on Saturday has led to a whole new world. Yay! Oh, and Spotify too, that helps. Any favourites out there, especially with nice bass? I'm going through the usual suspects: Cypress Hill and Public Enemy (especially with a bit of Tom Morello and sometimes TimC and Brad Wilk too), NWA, Dr Dre, Busta Rhymes... The Cypress Hill tracks with Tom Morello (of Rage Against The Machine fame, for those who are not familiar) are especially tasty... no surprise as it sounds like RATM without the whiny vocals of Zach Quote

Barking Spiders Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 (edited) You cant go far wrong with the Golden Age of hip hop over from the late 80s to mid 90s,with a lot of the usual suspects already named and a lot of the early gangsta stuff still holds up. NWA's Straight Outta Compton is as good as its rep has it. Also Ice T'S Original Gangster, Dr Dre's The Chronic and Ice Cube's AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted and Nas's Illmatic are pretty seminal. Of the current lot Run The Jewels stand out. Then there's yer instrumental hip hop, topped by DJ Shadow. Entroducing is a modern classic. Another good'un is Blockhead, on the Ninja Tune label, as was The Herbaliser who mash up funk, vocal and instrumental hip hop and jazz. Their best albums (IMHO) are, in chronological order: The Hard Road The Hard Road Restrung (rather than re-mixing the album the hired an orchestra - classical hip hop: genius! and makes Metallica's orchestral effort look rubbish) State Of The Art (my personal favourite - check out Chris Farley, Parade Of The Dead and Fifty In Five) Drinking From The Sun a lot of good music, including a lot of double bass. Gone off the boil on their last one - far more bland R&B arrangements which is a bit dull Quote
