Monkey Steve Posted March 8, 2017 Share Posted March 8, 2017 slightly off topic perhaps, but I always find it peculiar that Andertons are regarded as a GAK/Thomann type internet provider when to me they've always just been my local shop. I remember the days when they were a much more appealingly shambolic outfit, down a back road, opposite the local head shop, with a lot of second hand stuff piled up outside. I guess it goes to show that a bit of ambition and embracing the digital economy can work wonders. I need to go there in the next few weeks to get some stuff for my pedalboard (including a much larger pedalboard) so I'll perhaps report back. Monkey Steve Posted March 8, 2017 Share Posted March 8, 2017 (edited) Agreed - they seem to tread the line between being able to answer a detailed specific question without telling you stuff you don't care about, and not becoming too "salesman-y" and off-putting. It may be unconnected, but they have a lot of young musicians on tap to choose from as salespeople as the Academy of Contemporary Music is just round the corner. Possibly that also affects their sales techniques, if they have a lot of discerning customers who know more about their needs than the sales people. The other thing I like in comparison to GAK is that they don't differentiate between the physical and on line shops, certainly in my experience anyway. You go in and ask about something you've seen listed on their website and if it's not in the shop they'll pop out to the warehouse to fetch it for you. Although, it is a little characterless as a shop, and not as much fun as poking around Guitar Village up the road. That said, perhaps getting back to the point of the thread, I've never been very excited by the bass section, it always seems like a very poor relation to the guitars. The 'sound like' series with Bea and Matt, and the Guitar paradiso one with Danish Pete and Mick (not that one) Taylor are excellent. [/quote] I think they've improved a bit recently, it's not quite the Top Gear for guitars that the Chappers and The Captain vids evolved into, but it's getting there. Musicman20 Posted March 9, 2017 Author Share Posted March 9, 2017 Yeah I think it will take time, but I much prefer a nice chat about basses (although I spend a lot more time looking at guitar gear nowadays) than just very fast slap/obvious funk then nothing. They seemed to corner the YouTube market on guitar gear without even realising it...and now they, and 'That Pedal Show', are my two most watched channels. I'm hoping they continue with more bass videos. Nathan is a great player and seems to be relaxing more on camera. The only thing I've been disappointed with is the recent 'Sound Like' for Johnny Marr/The Smiths...which kinda made a point that a lot of their videos can be metal/heavy/detuned themed when it comes to some of the musicians (who are, lets face it, pretty damn great). They seemed to struggle to nail Johnny's sound and for the first time didn't seem that into it. Johnny is a fantastic player, doesn't shred/solo, yet his work is unique and can be difficult to play, as they seemed to demonstrate! As you point out, it's usually more of a metal/rock/blues thing going on, and of course that is what Bea plays so it's more natural for him, but considering how much of a genius Johnny Marr is I thought it was a good effort. Not perfect, but pretty good. I also watched the 'Best of' jams from Danish Pete and Mick (not that one) Taylor last night. Fantastic! I could listen to those two all day. Regarding All about the bass. Maybe they need to drop Lee Anderton. Perhaps they could find the bass world version of Mick Taylor to pair up with Nathan and things would be better? Couldn't see what I fancied, but the assistant urged me to come back in a couple of months as they were going all out to increase their bass department. I also noted that the bass amps weren't downstairs like they used to be, and there was a few amps dotted around in the bass "saloon". Is that "it" at the moment? Rikki_Sixx Posted March 9, 2017 Share Posted March 9, 2017 I love their videos, both guitar and bass focused, but I wish they'd do more bass stuff in their 'Sound Like..." series. The only time I've seen bass considered (and I haven't watched them all) was during the "Sound like Green Day..." video, and it just appeared in the room with them for a 30 second demo. No looking at options on the shop floor or talking about effects like they do with the rest of the gear. I always comment asking for more bass content in that series as it's the only way it'll happen. They have a great set of faces in their video content, really engaging and great players. Is Nathan from a well known band? He looks familiar. I should really buy from them as I love their content and the prices seem reasonable, but when it comes to a big purchase I'd rather buy in person and Andertons is way far away! When you consider that bass players generally make up a third or half of the guitarists in a band, the size of retail space set aside for bassists has always been a bit despairing. All the basses were kept on display in one of the sound rooms; none on the main shop floor. I wanted to try a few, but they were having a staff meeting in the room with all the basses, so the assistant had to keep going in to drag another one off the wall for me to try. I gave up after two, brought nothing and left after a short time having driven an hour to get there. I felt the basses were very much the poor relation. Glad they're ramping it up, perhaps they've realised the error of their ways? It'll be good to see a range of Spector basses which I understand they are now stocking. Works out pretty good if you buy something expensive or during the time they have 2x/3x loyalty points. Considering GAK used to dominate adverts etc, and I'd never heard of Andertons, (say 7-8 years back or more), Andertons really are at a level that most other stores need to compete with. E.g., loyalty points, genuinely good service, good shop, excellent online reviews, etc. GAK are way behind even with just their website. [/quote] yes he is, He is Nathan King, brother of Mark. He has been playing guitar for Level 42 for a while now but he is also a great bass player and plays bass for *Frost who are excellent. love the rob and lee videos funny and informative. the new bass video is great with Lee#2 as they both play bass, Lee#1 always seemed a bit lost with how t get involved but i still enjoyed those demos.
