Ray Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 I've never really been into P Basses - I've never played one - but I was wondering how similar an S1 Jazz in series sounds to a P Bass. Fender claims that the S1 switch gives "Jazz and Precision sounds in one instrument" but I'm not sure. I rarely use the S1 switch on my Jazz but I do quite like the sound. Still, it doesn't really sound much like a P to my ears but in my limited experience of P Basses I could be wrong. Any thoughts anyone? Cheers, Ray Quote
johnnylager Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 (edited) I'd say it's more P than J in series [a la P] and the mids are more prominent, but it's never going to be in the right position on the body. I used mine in series all the time on me old GL Jazz, just using parallel [a la J] for the er, jazzy stuff. Edited October 22, 2008 by johnnylager Quote

I found the live sound from the series was great - bit more mids than a ''normal'' Jazz sound which really helped live. Quote
Tracer Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 Back when I was still using mine regularly I found it sounded more P-ish, but I could tell the difference, and I've got crap ears. I used to use it with effects, and when recording on the computer (damn CRT hum!), but it was more of an interesting feature than something I used a lot. Quote
Geek99 Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 I have a jazz - I found I can get that P sound from my Zoom B2.1U using patch standard C6 Quote
Jase Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 I don't think it sounds anything like a P bass when using the S1, I never use it and would rather use a real P bass. IMO of course Quote
BigBeefChief Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 I've got a Jazz with S1 and use it constantly. I couldn't imagine not using it really. Sounds crap without it to my ears. But I've never been a fan of versatility. Quote
King Tut Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 I use the S1 on my jazz a lot - gives more depth and oomph - maybe not a true P sound but not that far off imho. Quote
OutToPlayJazz Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 I used to use my S1 a lot as well. It does give a lot more Precision-esque shove & bottom end. Rich. Quote

I've been thinking about getting one since I saw the article on Justin Meldal-Johnsen in Bass Player. Olympic white - rosewood - tort scratchplate. Nice... Quote
lineboss58 Posted October 23, 2008 Posted October 23, 2008 I found when the S1 to be quite good but thought without it the bass sounded naff a bit weak, looks like a lot of others think the same but i dont think it sounds like a precision. Quote
